Today we’d like to introduce you to Cassandra Clarke.
Hi Cassandra, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I wouldn’t be where I am today without my parents. They’re both from Haiti and worked their as* off because they wanted better for themselves and their family. Their resilience molded me into who I am today, and for that, I’m forever grateful.
I got to where I am because they allowed me to explore who I am, even while they were handling different hardships. Their strength gave me the freedom to chase my passions and create my own path.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Is any road really smooth ? lol
Of course not. There’s always doubt, self sabotage, imposter syndrome, and all the above. I just try to choose to show up for myself everyday. Stay ready so you don’t have to get ready. That’s really all you can do.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I’ve always been drawn to all things creative—photography, fashion, music, dance, videography, and acting.I dabble in a bit of everything, which probably explains why I can be a little indecisive at times. But at the core of it all, I’m a dancer. I love whining my waist or “gouyad”,that’s mostly what I’m known for.
What is Gouyad?
Gouyad (pronounced goo-yahd) is a sensual and soulful dance style rooted in Haitian culture. It’s all about slow, rhythmic hip movements, “whining,” and connecting with the music to express yourself
Through my brand, Woycheri, I focus on uplifting people and shining a light on different Haitian artists through music and dance. It’s about creating a space where people feel empowered to move, connect, and celebrate our culture without holding back. My slogan for my brand is dance the dance, face your fears. In hindsight just do the damn thing
Do you have any advice for those just starting out?
You have to start somewhere. That means showing up for yourself, even when you don’t want to. The greats didn’t become great in one day. Put that work in. Tunnel vision. How bad do you want it ?
