Today we’d like to introduce you to Cassandra Houston.

Hi Cassandra, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
My journey has been shaped by purpose, resilience, and a deep belief in the power of people. I began my career over 20 years ago in human resources and leadership roles across manufacturing, healthcare, and the nonprofit sector. Early on, I saw firsthand how strong leadership can transform workplaces and how the absence of it can limit people’s potential, especially women and communities of color.

Throughout my career, I’ve been trusted to step into complex organizations during periods of growth, change, or uncertainty. I’ve led large-scale HR and organizational development initiatives, built equitable systems from the ground up, and partnered closely with executive leaders to align people strategy with mission and impact. But what always mattered most to me wasn’t just policy or process it was helping people discover their voice, their confidence, and their purpose as leaders.

That passion ultimately led me to found Evolve Leadership and Development, LLC. Evolve was born from my own experiences navigating leadership spaces where representation, mentorship, and authentic development were often missing. I wanted to create something different a space where leadership development is personal, inclusive, and rooted in self-awareness. My work focuses on helping individuals and organizations lead from within, with intention and integrity.

I’m also the author of Leading From Within, Leading With a Purpose, an international best-selling book that reflects my leadership philosophy and the lessons I’ve learned along the way. Through Evolve, my book, and my speaking and mentorship work, I support corporate leaders, nonprofits, women, and youth in building the skills, confidence, and clarity needed to lead meaningful change.

Today, I continue to balance my role as a senior HR leader with my work as an entrepreneur, author, and mentor. Every step of my journey both the challenges and the wins has reinforced my belief that leadership isn’t about title or position. It’s about growth, accountability, and using your influence to make a lasting impact. That belief is what continues to guide me forward.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
No, it definitely hasn’t been a smooth road and I’ve learned that the challenges are often the most formative part of the journey. Like many entrepreneurs and leaders, I’ve had to navigate moments of self-doubt, burnout, and the pressure of carrying both responsibility and vision at the same time. Building a career while often being one of the few women of color in leadership spaces meant I had to work harder to be heard, trusted, and valued, even with the experience and results to back it up.

One of the biggest struggles was learning to bet on myself. Stepping out to build Evolve Leadership and Development while maintaining a demanding executive HR role required discipline, sacrifice, and a clear sense of purpose. There were moments when time, resources, and capacity felt stretched thin, and I had to learn how to set boundaries, ask for support, and trust the process instead of trying to do everything alone.

Another challenge was unlearning the idea that leadership has to look a certain way. Early in my career, I felt pressure to conform to shrink parts of myself to fit into traditional leadership molds. Over time, I realized that my authenticity, lived experience, and empathy were not weaknesses but strengths. Embracing that truth changed how I lead, how I serve clients, and how I show up in the world.

The road hasn’t been easy, but it’s been purposeful. Every challenge refined my voice, strengthened my resilience, and clarified my mission. Those struggles are the very reason I’m so passionate about helping others lead from within because I know firsthand what it takes to grow through adversity and come out stronger on the other side.

Collaboration is a big part of my work. I partner with organizations, consultants, speakers, and community leaders who share a passion for leadership, equity, and development. This includes co-creating programs, facilitating retreats, speaking on panels, and contributing to initiatives that elevate leadership capacity and community impact.
