Meet Catherine Johnson of Macon, Ga.

Today we’d like to introduce you to Catherine Johnson.

Hi Catherine, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
My small business was started May of 2021 which was a unique time to start anything due to Covid 19 still being so active, let alone a business that requires such a high level of personal connection and trust. I was Transitioning from a somewhat desk job with a guaranteed paycheck from my employer to the unknown, I was “terrified of failure” but I had to make an “executive decision” in my life. The sudden shift in mindset-moving from a passenger in my life to the pilot was one of the most important decision that I would make. After careful thinking and praying about it a decision was finally made to just try it. So I decided on a unique name “ Lush Locs Hair BAR INC.” and obtain my business license. Shortly afterwards I was opened for business and I quickly learned that The loc industry isn’t just about hair; it’s about patience, identity, and transformation, which seems to mirror my own journey of taking that leap of faith.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
The hair business certainly has its ups and downs especially when Providing a service doing dreadlocks because it is so common these days. So I strive to provide a service that stands out from the rest. Structural planning has been a tool I use to stay competitive and to retain clientale; so when I have slow or low productive months I use that time to strategize ways to build more returning customers.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I am known for doing locs in my hometown called Macon, Ga.. The clents I cater to either want to start their loc journey or already have traditional or micro locs. I have an assistant named Jamie Johnson (my cousin) who assists me with providing a great welcoming experience to each person who sits in my chair. I proud myself on educating my clients about different tips to take the best care of their particular hair type to promote healthy growing locs.

Do you any memories from childhood that you can share with us?
When I was 12 or maybe 13 years old, on the weekends my mom friends would allow me to do their hair. I’m talking about from perms to putting in track hair I was doing it all. It was the start of something that I grew to enjoy doing.
I self taught myself how to do hair because I didn’t like the way my mom did it but that was because cooking is her specialty not hair, lol.
