Today we’d like to introduce you to Catherine Kent.
Catherine, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
My start into Photography as a business was quite accidental- I have a love for fashion and was starting a fashion blog. My friend offered to take photos for me on a camera I had just received as a gift. The day we had taken them, she had her children with her, and I offered to take some pictures of them with her- to which she happily did so. I posted them online, and received SEVEN inquiries for photoshoots by the next day! It was then I realized that this was a possible business venture to pursue. Over the past year and a half since, I’ve embarked on a journey that has grown my skillset, my creative capacity, and my vision of what I wanted as an entrepreneur- while bumping my head a lot along the way!
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
I would be both lying and delusional if I said it was a smooth road! My introduction into Photography was quite the turn from the trajectory of what I had “planned” (I use quotations because one thing I’ve learned in this season of life is it is a rarity that life goes as planned.) This new opportunity placed before me required a creative talent I had never explored before that point- I had a lot of learning to do and very little time to do it with new clients rolling in. One thing I knew for sure, though, was that I loved it- I loved the new people I get to meet, the challenge of capturing their precious personalities in still frame, and the creative process of editing- so I was determined to make it work.
It had become the most challenging to me this past winter when I experienced my first huge wave of consistent clientele. The continuous flow of people for four months straight was a dream- but quickly left me feeling burned out and overwhelmed. However, it was one of the most defining and influential moments do far in this journey. Once I had gotten through it and had time to breathe, I was able to reflect and realize some places I needed to grow and become more disciplined. I’m not 100% there yet, but I’m pretty content with the progress I’ve made thus far.
Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about CK Photography – what should we know?
I run a Photography business- my specialty being in Portraiture and Entrepreneurial Personal Branding. I’m known for my editorial skills and customer service, which is coincidentally what I take the most pride in with my company. I’ve worked hard to gain the knowledge and skill that I currently have, and valuing customer service was ingrained in me before I had a business of my own.
Any shoutouts? Who else deserves credit in this story – who has played a meaningful role?
First and foremost- I believe God is the head of my life- without His provision and guidance, I wouldn’t be where I am. I have an incredible family and support system who helped guide me, push me, and (at times) allowed me to vent- especially in my mother, whose business prowess taught me practically everything I know, and my uncle, who was a major source of inspiration to with his own successful ventures into entrepreneurship.
