Today we’d like to introduce you to Nicole Reid.
Nicole, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I have always had an interest in beauty, hair, and fashion. About three years ago I decided to do my own makeup for New Years instead of having it done professionally. I watched as many tutorials and bought all the makeup I could from MAC and when the day came to do my makeup… I looked like a ghost! But it really pulled out my creative side and made me want more. I started investing more into my makeup and people started asking me to do their makeup. Now I am so in love with my dream of becoming a full-time makeup artist. I am currently trying to build my clientele and followers on social media.
Has it been a smooth road?
It hasn’t been a smooth road because I already have a full-time job as a marketer. So when I get offered some jobs I am unable to take them because of my “9-5” there are moments that I am able to be flexible and there are moments that I have to but the job first because it pays my bills. It’s hard to find that balance and to know what opportunities are career making and what opportunities aren’t.
Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and career?
I can’t really say I believe in luck, I believe that all my blessings come from God and the plan that he has for me. Everything that has happened for me has been based on the right time for the opportunity that I’ve been blessed with. No luck just blessed.
Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
My personality! People definitely buy into the total package but without a personality that makes the client feel comfortable and trusting of my creativity I will not be able to get far.
Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
I love that Atlanta has so many more opportunities than many other cities have to offer! What I dislike is that SOME of the established MUA don’t really take some of us newbies and really mentor us and help us get on their level. I am always looking for guidance on how to really grow in this industry.
