Meet Chamblee Cinematographer, Dancer, and Creative Director: Paul Nguyen

Today we’d like to introduce you to Paul Nguyen.

Paul, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
Around the age of 12 is when I picked up dancing, primarily hip-hop/breakdancing. I have been dancing for 10+ years but about 3 years ago is when I picked up a camera and decided that I wanted to learn film production and have that as my main focus, I still dance for fun haha. Dance will always be a part of my life. I was always interested in film production, wondering to myself how TV shows or movies were produced and created. Plus, I thought it would be cool that maybe one day I might see myself on screen haha

Has it been a smooth road?
It has not been an easy journey for me to get to where I am today. As a creative freelancer, you go through A LOT of ups and downs wondering if your work is good enough or whatever you’re doing, is worth it all in the end?

Feeling ok with failure…finding the silver lining in the situation, learn from it, then pick yourself up and apply what you learned and do it better the next time.

You can’t do it all on your own, you need a team. Connecting with the right people and surrounding yourself with a great support group to push you and reaffirm that you going in the right direction.

What role has luck had in your life and career?
Good luck has played a pretty good role in my life and career, bad luck? I don’t believe that there is bad luck. If something negative happened at that point of time, take that experience, learn from it and apply the lesson to your life. Work on it a little at a time, then you’ll look back at that time you had “bad luck” and say to yourself “It wasn’t that bad..” haha

Do you feel like there are certain traits that increase the likelihood of success?
I feel what is most important to my success is being friendly to my clients and everyone else I meet. I really like getting to know who I’m working with and understanding who they are as a person before I talk about work. Being able to have that camaraderie will give both parties a fun experience during the project.

What do you love about our city and what do you dislike?
What I like best about our city is that there are so many creative artists doing amazing things! What I dislike, is that they aren’t getting enough exposure publicly and other artists aren’t hearing about them. Without good digital content, we aren’t hearing the voices that want to change and evolve the creative community.
