Meet Chanda Williams of Kirkwood

Today we’d like to introduce you to Chanda Williams.

Chanda, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I have been a photographer my whole life. Since I can remember I have seen life as photographs, and loved to document people on film. After the wonderful birth of my first son I became very interested in birth, and went on to become a birth doula. Soon after I realized that I could combine my doula work with my love of photography. I began offering maternity photo sessions, and after attending my first few births I began photographing births as well. As clients began asking for more, my business grew to include newborn and family sessions, and eventually senior portraits as well. I love supporting families and capturing authentic moments!

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The hardest part of my business has been the on-call periods. As your doula and/or birth photographer I am on-call starting at your 38th week of pregnancy, and possibly up to your 42nd (and once 43rd) week. This means I need to be attached to my phone, in bed early, and ready to drop what I am doing and be gone from my family for sometimes up to 48 hours. I’ve missed my own family’s important moments in order to serve others, and that has been hard.

As far as my photography goes, the hardest part of that has been finding my voice as a photographer. At first I thought that I had to offer what other people were offering, which for newborn photography at the time was “baby in baskets”…So I bought my posing beanbag and lots of props, and would lug it all to my client’s house for a newborn session. But each session started to feel the same, and it quickly became boring to me. I realized that authenticity was lacking, and I got rid of all the props. I now offer “lifestyle” photography, which means focusing on connections and moments rather than props. I no longer pose babies, or anyone for that matter! Instead I guide my clients into a situation that will result in beautiful images. I document what their family and home are like in this moment.

Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Chanda Williams – what should we know?
I am a doula and photographer. I offer birth and postpartum doula services to families in Atlanta, which means offering non-judgmental support and information. I help families transition into parenthood with confidence. I also offer photography, from maternity to senior portraits, and including birth photography.

I am one of the few doula photographers in Atlanta, and am proud to offer both services to families.

Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
Calm patience! Whether I am chasing a toddler through a field or holding space for a birthing Mother, I bring a calm presence that puts people at ease.
