Today we’d like to introduce you to Chantal Smith.
Chantal, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
As a child, I had always had four career choices in mind, forensic scientist, veterinarian, mortician, or something dealing with communications. Being where I am today, a licensed massage therapist and small business owner, I’ve learned and come to appreciate how God will always laugh at your plans and place u exactly where u need to be. As I just hinted, I never planned on my career field and although I could have envisioned being an entrepreneur because I was raised with an entrepreneurial spirit, I never thought I would be a massage therapist and love what I do so it never really feels like work. Creating candles feeds into my love for aromatherapy that grew through my profession and my desire for creativity.
In 2016, I was actually bored and just working at a spa full time when one day I realized I was out of candles and anyone who knows me can attest that I love to research things so I googled “how to make my own candle” I read too many articles to remember and until I stumbled onto a website that stood out to me because they were like a one-stop shop for every tool that was said to be needed to make candles… I ordered what I needed and I had made my very own soy candles, I kept a few to burn and I gifted some to family and friends because I was so excited of what I had created. I’ve always loved crafts so this was an overjoyed moment. I asked for raw feedback and unexpectedly it was just the responses and encouragement I needed to make more. A friend of mine suggested I sell them so after giving it some thought, planning and praying I kept making test candles to get the science and process down pat , I didn’t have a name when I decided to create this business so I actually wrote down a prayer to God asking that he bless this venture and that I needed a name for it. Within a week, one just “popped into my head ” I ran it past a few people and they loved it just as much as I did… when 2017 rolled around, I had made my first sale! Since then, I have made custom candles for a wedding, baby shower favors, custom personal sets, and many more creations. I’ve attended networking events and vended to help spread Fusion Scents awareness. I am proud of myself but know that I want to see my products on shelves one day soon and day after day I am making progress towards every goal I have set for myself and my business.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
It definitely hasn’t been a smooth road but it has been one that I’ve enjoyed the twists and turns. My biggest struggle has been staying motivated when sales aren’t coming in or I’m having a blocked mind on how to promote Fusion Scents and gain more exposure. I’m a creative so my mind tends to jump from idea to idea but the passion I put into my Fusion Scents products helps me stay on track
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Fusion Scents Ltd Co story. Tell us more about the business.
Fusion Scents Ltd co-creates handmade HomeGoods. Soy candles and Lifts which are air fresheners. I decided to name them lifts because whenever someone uses it I want them to feel like they’re lifting up the energy and vibe of where ever it is. I also have other products in the works that I will add to extend my line. Fusion Scents is an experience. I’m most proud of creating natural items and creating products with quality that I can stand on. Fusion Scents is about educating our supporter’s on the importance and benefits of aromatherapy, I feel like that is what sets us apart.
Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
I am a blessed person and I know God’s grace covers my life and all personal and business endeavors that I encounter. It’s not luck, I am chosen to be the difference in my family and I’m going to live up to just that.
