Meet Charaka Cook of The Cook Group in Brookhaven

Today we’d like to introduce you to Charaka Cook.

Charaka, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I was previously in the mortgage business. After the real estate recession, I lost all of my income. I was introduced to the insurance business and obtained my Life Insurance license in 2013. I had a very slow start. My Dad became ill and I spent a lot of time with him during the early years in my new career. However, I also had the freedom and flexibility to be able to work around being able to care for my Dad. He passed in 2016 and my why became greater than myself. In late 2016, I had a turning point in my life and got re-focused, set some new goals and was determined to reach them. I started working more and got serious about helping people with life insurance. In 2017, I decided to expand my business and I started hiring agents and teaching others how to sell insurance, which took my business to the next level.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
No, it has not been a smooth road. I had a very slow start primarily because I was doing something new and I was afraid. I had to make a decision to push past my fears because I was standing in my own way. In the beginning, I wasn’t as serious about my career. Once I made a committed decision, I became relentless.

Please tell us about The Cook Group.
I help people with insurance. I focus on life insurance and specialize in helping people prepare for one of the worst days of their families life by helping them to put a plan in place. Currently, I focus on hiring and training new agents across the country.

What sets me apart from others is that we specialize in helping new agents (through mentorship and training), like myself six and a half years ago, to get started and become successful in this business. I am proud to be the leading female agency manager in my industry.

Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
I don’t believe in luck. I believe in work ethic. If you go to work consistently and don’t quit, you can be successful.
