Meet Charisse Brathwaite

Today we’d like to introduce you to Charisse Brathwaite.

Hi Charisse, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I decided to begin my journey of fully embracing being a loctician in March 2020. I have always done my own locs since 2016 and that is where I gained my passion for twisting locs and natural hair. Once the pandemic hit, I knew I needed a way to make money while using my skill set. I was tired of working for companies and making them profitable while struggling. Once I took the leap of faith and started my own business, I never looked back. There have been many struggles along the way, but with the support of friends and family, I am still standing!

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
The road has been very bumpy! I have struggled mostly with believing in myself. My coping mechanism is second-guessing and overanalyzing. Because of that, I did not put myself in the spotlight to have my work recognized. There have been financial struggles, business identity struggles and faith struggles but it does get better.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I am a loctician. I specialize in servicing locs while also dabbling in protective styling. I am known for my rope twists (two-strand twists). When I style my client’s locs in that way, it is two styles in one that lasts them weeks. I am most proud of how far I have come. I can say that in the beginning, I never imagined interviewing for a well-known magazine. What sets me apart from others is that I truly love locs, all locs! I can converse with my clients for hours about products they can try, styles that push the limits and everyday maintenance for their hair.

Can you talk to us a bit about the role of luck?
I don’t believe in luck so I’m not sure how it has been a factor. But faith, I stand on that 10 toes down. I know where my help comes from and my faith is what has sustained me.
