Meet Chef Slum of SlumCity Kitchen in Metro Atlanta

Today we’d like to introduce you to Chef Slum.

Chef, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
Hello everybody, nice to meet you, my name is Slum. I’m originally from Mobile, AL but I have a splash of NYC in me. I started cooking when I was 13, my father was the Chef of my family and he had a niche for always making great southern dishes such as Fried Chicken, Gumbo, and Jambalaya. Originally just watching him, I learned how to cook for the masses. I come from a big family. I loved to learn about cooking and it became fun! I started to really teach myself a lot of techniques and focused on improving my craft in cooking, colors and consistency.

Has it been a smooth road?
Of course, it hasn’t been easy. The Chef route is definitely not one for the weak. When first starting out, I struggled a lot with confidence, being comfortable, social and public speaking. It’s something that grows on you every single day. At first, I didn’t know whether I would take it seriously, then I realized that cooking made me genuinely happy and how others felt about my cooking was the same.

We’d love to hear more about SlumCity Kitchen.
SlumCity Kitchen is a Networking platform/Kitchen where creatives can explore and engage in new partnerships. I created this platform to connect individuals and creators, likewise together with food. I started SlumCity Kitchen in 2018 as a standing movement to feed the homeless community in Atlanta. Once I realized and started to understand that “if you take one step, others will step with you,” I started a movement called SlumDrop. An active movement to drop 60 meals a year to the homeless of Atlanta. With that idea, I created the platform SlumCity Kitchen to bring creatives together to share ideas like SlumDrop. As a Chef, I specialize in Southern-Creole cuisine, such as Creole LambChops, Gumbo, Jambalaya and my famous Mac+Sleeze.

Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
Atlanta is one of the most progressive and thriving Cities I have ever experienced. Since coming to Atlanta in 2015, I believe I was able to find myself joining a platform of new-age entrepreneurs. The atmosphere is unlike any other city and the food literally brings the city to life.
