Today we’d like to introduce you to Chelsea Johnson (aka Chelsea Brianna J).
Chelsea, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
So, let’s dive in! The moment I realized how to form words, flow to tunes and two-step simultaneously as a preschool-aged child, I fell in love with singing. My parents placed me in the church choir at the age of three, and I began to develop from there. By the age of seven, my parents had me performing solos for various church platforms, conferences, pageants and other awesome engagements throughout Georgia. I distinctly remember being so young, terrified and pleasantly happy at the same time- talk about an adrenaline rush!
Upon completion of undergraduate school (go Ga. State University!), I accepted my role in music as a worship leader. This assignment revealed such a deep, intangible and incredible desire within me- my purpose. The day that I discovered singing/music as my purpose (and not just something that I greatly enjoyed), was the day I truly came alive! From that experience on, I knew that singing/music would be my gift to the world- no matter which genre I chose.
My love for music continuously blossomed and has granted me unique opportunities as a (current) professional background vocalist for a number of talented, independent artists. If the walls could talk, they’d tell the world that music literally saved my life. It flows through me. It breathes within me. It tells the story.
Has it been a smooth road?
Smooth road?! Is that a thing? LOL. This path has been everything but smooth. I’ve cried many nights asking God for another purpose, but this is my journey! I have overcome rejection, self-hindrance and spiritual obstacles along the way; however, the challenges that I overcame taught me how to be firmly rooted in discipline, excellence, and most importantly, my identity.
What do you do, what do you specialize in, what are you known for, etc. What are you most proud of? What sets you apart from others?
I am a singer, songwriter, recording artist and YouTuber. In addition to being a background vocalist for other artists, I am also embracing my place as an R&B, independent artist. It’s time to share all of me beyond “behind the scenes.” It would be absolutely divine if everyone would go and download my debut single, “All of Me.” It is available on all digital music outlets!
As an artist, I specialize in the areas of resonance and soul. I am known for my earthy, warm tones. I understand and apply the cohesive pairing of notes in composition and emotion. In a world full of vocal imitation, I am most proud of my authentic voice.
Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
I love the rhythm and energy! The culture is so rich. I mean, seriously, there is no other city like Atlanta. It offers the perfect, creative climate for creators like myself. Atlanta is the place for the dreamer AND the doer. I’m grateful to call it home. Now, if only we could get the weather in Atlanta (Georgia) to get in sync!
