Today we’d like to introduce you to Cherish Davis.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I was born and raised in Los Angeles, California. There I began to cheer and grew to love dance. I was always dancing at home, at family cookouts, and with my cousins.
Later, I moved to Georgia where I continued to cheer competitively in high school and at the collegiate level at Georgia State University.
When I entered graduate school in Savannah, Georgia, I decided to go after training in ballet and joined a performing arts group. After attending the Pulse Tour in 2016, and auditioning to dance with Missy Elliot in 2017, I eagerly searched for hip hop training in Savannah.
I finally found an adult hip hop class to attend mid-year 2017. A year later, I began teaching adult and kids hip hop in Savannah and the surrounding areas. I also had the privilege of choreographing competition routines for different studios, along with running a dance after school program in my area.
I have always desired to be active in the dance community, giving others a healthy outlet through dance. I desire to continue to grow in my craft while providing resources and tips for dancers. I want others to go after their passions, no matter how old they are. As long as you are breathing, it’s not too late. “Hope deferred makes the heart sick, but a longing fulfilled is a tree of life.” -Proverbs 13:12
Due to the coronavirus pandemic, I have transitioned to a virtual platform, providing free dance tutorials on YouTube to those wanting to learn. When I started as a dancer, I searched for cost-efficient options. I did not always have the funds to take classes consistently. I hope through providing this free resource to dancers, they can stay motivated during this time of social distancing.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
I always knew that I wanted to get more involved with dancing and have a business. Starting off, I had to do a lot of research and seek advice about how to even start a dance business. This was new to me, however, I had a lot of support, which made the transition seem smooth. I am still growing and learning how to reach other dancers.
I think the biggest obstacle was trying to balance my full-time job as a Special Education Teacher and teaching dance after school. There is a lot of work that is put into it, but I hope that the hard work will pay off in the future!
We’d love to hear more about your business.
Vibe Tribe Dance is all about expressing oneself through dance. Dancing is a healthy outlet to deal with stress and to let go and have fun! I specialize in hip hop choreography for all ages. In addition to classes, I do on-location parties which include but is not limited to bachelorette and birthday parties. I am most proud of the momentum and support received from the community. Studio owners have been so gracious to letting me rent out space and provide great advice to me. My students have brought such great energy to classes, and their progress has been so encouraging to see! I love going into class and seeing them ready to see what dance they are learning next. Their joy keeps me going. The thing that sets me apart from others is that I strive to provide clean hip hop to my classes, making sure that all music is edited, and my moves are tasteful.
What were you like growing up?
Growing up, I would say I was shy but outgoing. It wasn’t until grad school where I felt like I truly could express myself. This is when I began to dance more.
I love all things active and enjoy making the most of opportunities. I am a triplet and have a younger brother, so I had a very fun childhood, as we were always finding things to do.
I was interested in art, hip hop dancing, skating, doing hair, PE, and math. These interests allowed me to create and keep moving!
