Today we’d like to introduce you to Cheryl Joseph.
Hi Cheryl, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I would like to start by sharing that I am originally from Yonkers, NY. I am 33 years young and a mother to a beautiful, talented 17-year-old. I moved us down to Atlanta back in 2014, where we began our journey together.
Here’s how I got to where I am today…
Well, it all started with my daughter & me being a single parent. At the time, she was in the 8th grade and was in her prime time of wanting different braid styles which monthly became really expensive. With wanting to meet her needs, I was determined to learn what was becoming popular “ knotless braids”. Month after month, I’d practice until my friends began to notice that it was me who was keeping her hair up. From that point, my friends became super supportive while I learned to perfect my craft. Their word of mouth and recommendations spread in a way I would have never imagined. The peak of this actually occurred during Covid.
At the time, I was working in the Airline industry which took a massive hit during the pandemic. One day I thought to myself why not make this an actual business, I decided to name it Cherri Braids.
Once I decided to give the entrepreneur world a shot I began accepting clients from a homemade suite I created in my sunroom.
See, I’ve always loved being in customer service but being on the phone BUT providing a beauty service to a diversity of women is an indescribable joy it brings me.
In 2022, I decided to quit my job, branched off into a professional suite space and take my joy and love of bringing such confidence to the women I serviced because as we know, there’s nothing like a fresh set of braids lol especially a set that’s long-lasting, lightweight & installed with love to the crown of a woman’s head.
A year of entrepreneurship has definitely taught me about trials and success. Today I can not believe the amount of goal-driven women I have connected with and also who have trusted me with their crowns. I’ve been so inspired by many who have pushed me to keep going. I recently rebranded to Sevyn Crowns, which tells the story of my journey in Atlanta. The number seven has always followed my God-given path and the crown represents not only the beauty in the hair that we wear so proudly but the Blessing I’m able to share with each that chooses my gift to bless & protect their crowns.
Because everyone knows me as Cherri Braids, I decided to keep my name but branch it under Sevyn Crowns as it begins to expand. Understanding that not every female has love braids so I launched an online store that provides an option to purchase extensions through our online store & will soon be launching hair growth oils.
My goal is to continue to bring happiness to women all over. You never know what strength and poker face someone has, but I want to be a stamp and a part of the reason why they remember no matter what style you choose to wear your hair, your crown is as beautiful as the person wearing it!
I can only thank God for where he has placed me today. I also thank him for making my energy & heart so pure that I may pour into someone who just may need a simple pat on the back!
WEAR YOUR CROWN LOUD & PROUD!
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Absolutely not.
There are data where I wanted to give in because I wasn’t taking the proper care of my body for anyone in the beauty industry, food industry, etc. I strongly encourage to get massages for anything that may be essential to perform your duties…. Whether that may be your hands, feet, back or body.
Also, be sure to get a financial advisor or educate yourself on bookkeeping
Do a thorough research on vendors and follow up with reviews.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I am a braid stylist who specializes in lightweight knotless braids.
I’m most proud of the technique I taught myself and my focus on staying consistent and continuing to constantly perfect my craft.
What I believe sets me apart is the actual love and care for anyone’s hair. I take the time to educate myself so I can educate those I service. I discuss issues I discover in their hair and share my recommendations. It’s actually funny that you ask this question because one of the top feedbacks I receive from my clients in person and via the web is the strong report I begin during the initial contact. It is said that I bring comfort, confidence and excitement prior to their service date because of my customer service.
We’d love to hear about any fond memories you have from when you were growing up?
My favorite childhood memory… that’s a tough one, traveling was one for sure. I don’t know how my mother could ever afford it but she exposed me to as much as I can remember & another I’d have to say is the day one of my elder cousins taught me how to braid at the age of eight on my size Barbie lol. Ahh, I was so infatuated with beads at the time and obviously couldn’t do my own hair. I’m the youngest female in the first generation of cousins, so I learned to braid plats on the Barbie just to add beads. Haha! It was really skyrocket from there.
