Meet Chevy of Sinister Rabbit Tattoo Studios in Midtown

Today we’d like to introduce you to Chevy.

Chevy, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I’ve always been an artist as a young kid. I started of withdrawing LooneyToons. Bugs Bunny and Daffy Duck were my favorite. As I got older, I fell out of art and focused more on sports and girls. Fast forward some years after school and quite a bit of trouble with the law, having a felony on my record by then I knew I’d have to work for employers, which is the last thing I wanted to do. Getting back into my art was my peace. Kept me out of the streets. So with that, I figured if I learned to tattoo, I’d be able to be my own boss. So I gathered all the info I could and started tattooing out of my home. Taught myself and went hard at it and now I’m here. About 6 years in the game.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It’s definitely been a bumpy road. Being a self-taught artist, other artists ones who have had apprenticeships tend to kind of look down on you. It’s hard to gain knowledge from them that you can apply and grow from. Luckily my bro Eon brought me into my first shop as an artist and allowed me to gain as much info as I wanted. If I didn’t ask, I wouldn’t learn. If I did, he was happy to teach me. Things began to smooth out after that.

Please tell us about Sinister Rabbit Tattoo Studios.
MAN!!!!! Well, I just opened my first studio!!!!! The name is Sinister Rabbit Tattoo Studios. I specialize in black and grey realism and abstract. Trash Polka as well. Portraits. I’m feel there’s no style I can’t do, but I would say those are the styles I’m sought out about. I think right now, aside from the fact that I just opened my own business I’m most proud of my style. I have a style that tells me apart from any other artist I FEEL. I call it the IZM lol. But it has also gained the name “Chevy Custom,” and whatever it is, it is always one of my own designs. Created from my brain. Different. Unique. And I find pride and gratitude in the fact that my clients will flip through my available ones and allow me to but my own art on them for life. Pretty much now, my whole portfolio is Chevy Customs. I’m also happy to have my boy 7 working with me at the Stu. He specializes in animated, color realism, and too much to even try to list. The homie is talented. _7arts on IG.

Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
That’s a tough one there’s so many. I’d say when I was old enough to take off my grandpa’s boots! Lol. My grandpa Moses owned his own lawn company for longer than I’ve been alive. But he would be out working all day every day and come home and sit in his recliner and then call my older cousins to come to take his boots off for him. The problem was his feet stunk so bad from work all day, so my cousins would argue amongst each other until one gave in and did it. But the day he asked me to do it, I felt it was a right of passage! I thought very highly of my grandpa and to me, it was everything. May he rest peacefully.
