Today we’d like to introduce you to Chi Phan.
Hi Chi, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today.
Hi, I am Chi Phan (Pronounced Chee Fawn). As an immigrant from Vietnam, my upbringing was steeped in the expectation of becoming a doctor, as is often the case in Asian households. But that was not to be my path.
I’ve tried my hand at plenty of jobs, but modeling was one of my favorites. I’m grateful for the experience I gained from commercial print modeling opportunities that were available through the textile industry where I grew up in W-S, NC & Atlanta, GA. I loved finding creativity in my poses and seeing myself in various lights… the way the photographers saw me.
Whether I was modeling for hang tags for Hanes apparel, and softball uniforms, or as a hair model for Aveda through Van Michael Salons, I developed a profound admiration for photography. Yet, it was the arrival of my first child that sparked a deeper connection with the craft, leading me to transition from being in front of the camera to capturing cherished moments behind it.
For 18 years, I navigated the corporate landscape as an International Sales Manager, relishing the opportunity to document my global adventures through photography. Through this lens, I discovered my passion for natural light portrait photography, finding beauty in both landscapes and the people within them.
I am now a photographer developing my passion career. As a former model, I can comfortably say, “I’ve got you from both sides of the camera”! Today, the greatest joy comes from witnessing the awe and delight of my clients as they see themselves through my lens. Their reactions reaffirm my love for the art of photography in front and behind the camera.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Starting a business is challenging, but venturing into a service where potential clients perceive it as expensive and something they can do themselves adds an extra layer of difficulty. According to Google, reports suggest that 60% of photographers give up their business within their first year. Despite being in my fourth year, I still refer to myself as a struggling artist, striving to demonstrate the value of my craft.
Photography, being subjective, faces intense competition. Anyone with a camera can call themselves a “photographer”. This further complicates the market landscape. Earning a livable wage has been an uphill battle, particularly when potential clients balk at perceived high rates.
They don’t know enough about photography to respect it as a profession and appreciate the extensive pre-production and post-production work involved, nor do they recognize the technical prowess and finesse that manifests as the unique artistic style required to capture that perfect, seemingly effortless shot that professional photographers deliver.
As you know, we’re big fans of Chi Phan Photography. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
I was in search of my next career after leaving an 18-year corporate career as an International Sales Manager for a building products company. It never occurred to me to become a photographer but my husband, having witnessed my constant photo documenting over the years, suggested it as a natural career path. With his support, I turned my passion for photography into a fulfilling career during the pandemic, in October 2020.
I specialize in portrait photography, capturing keepsake memories through thoughtful editorial planning and creating opportunities for spontaneous moments. My goal is to capture genuine, natural-looking moments. They may be “posed” but the goal is to make them look natural.
The emotions you experience during your shoot will be clearly reflected in the images I provide. The rapport between the photographer and the subject is crucial for capturing authentic expressions. One client remarked that they didn’t expect a comedian when they hired me, which made me laugh. I strive to make the photoshoot fun by showing up with my lively personality. If we’re not having fun during the session, it will show in the images.
A common question during shoots is, “What do I do with my hands?” I provide specific guidance on hand placement to ensure they complement the pose rather than distract from it. I aim to give clear directions to help my subjects feel comfortable and confident. Additionally, I’m mindful of my reactions when reviewing images on the spot, as an unenthusiastic response could make my clients self-conscious.
Angles play a crucial role in highlighting my clients’ best features. Many believe that shooting from above is flattering because it is “thinning,” but this can actually make you appear shorter and disproportionate, with a bobblehead effect. I prefer to shoot slightly upwards to give an impression of height and confident poise. Correcting head positioning is key to minimizing the double chin effect. If you’ve worked with me, you’ll hear me say, “Chin out and slightly down.”
Regardless of your size, the natural neck position isn’t always flattering. By extending your neck and adjusting your chin, you enhance your appearance. Not every photographer may agree with my upward angle approach; each has their own methods to capture their clients’ best sides.
Photography is very stylistic which makes it personal. Choose your photographer based on their photographic style and their ability to bring out your best side. Consider giving me the opportunity to do that for you. I’ve got you from both sides of the camera!
Can you talk to us about how you think about risk?
As a photographer, I believe that taking risks is essential for growth in creativity. It means stepping out of my comfort zone, experimenting with new techniques whether in camera or in post-processing, and embracing unconventional ideas.
Risk-taking allows me to capture unique and compelling images that show emotion. It doesn’t always work out as I envision but the reward is in the process of seeking greater artistic expression for a more dynamic portfolio. Ultimately, taking risks is about pushing my boundaries to achieve results I did not know I was capable of.
