Hi Chris, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
So my journey as an entrepreneur started when I was 7 years old and I decided I wanted to make some money without asking my mom and I decided to line up my toys on the side of the road and flag down cars to convince them to buy my toys, I enjoyed the feeling of the exchange with people and sales transactions so I knew from that day forward that I wanted to sell. As I got into college I knew while in school that I wanted to own my own business but I wasn’t sure what to sell whether it be a product or service but I knew I wanted to sell so while in school I decided to get a job at a cell phone retailer to keep my sales skills polished and challenge me so I took up that job and did well, I even was recognized as the top sales person in the region one month and it provided me with the opportunity to be comfortable being uncomfortable. While everything was going great at this particular job one day they decided to not pay me any commission for my previous sales the previous month so as you can imagine I was furious as anyone would be so I walked out, the problem with that was I still had rent to pay and it didn’t hit me until I got home that night. Where one door closed another one opened as I saw that a local State Farm agent visited the college that I graduated from and she desperately needed a sales person. I did not know anything about insurance at all except for all the commercials that they used to run and me dropping off a money order for my mom at a local State Farm office in Atlanta. Working at this position definitely help mold the sales professional that I am today, it showed me that this was the exact type of product that I was looking to sell, meaning something thatI can build community, business relationships and make a impact on families by advising them on protecting their assets. After doing this for a couple of years it was inevitable that I was going to do this on my own I just needed to get started, one day in my apartment I sat down and came up with a plan, to have an agency that is focused on helping small businesses through commercial insurance and from there MIG Agency was born.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It definitely was not smooth but I would say it was necessary because the road less traveled is never smooth. While I had experience helping other agents build their agencies from the ground up I had no idea all of the admin work that goes on behind the scenes, also sometimes what you think the market is going to respond to they don’t so you have to fill in the need to where the market is responding as far as products that they are looking for
