Today we’d like to introduce you to Carter Ivey, Molly and Chris Ruttle.
Carter, Molly, and Chris, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
Molly – After completing a BA (English) and MA (Teaching English), I have taught in a variety of public and private schools as well as tutored. Much of my expertise has been in multi-lingual environments, teaching English in both a Japanese immersion school and a Chinese Saturday school.
Carter – I have combined studies for BA (History) and MA (Public History – not completed) with practical experience in history and natural history museums, where I developed and constructed exhibits, taught school classes, and docented.
Chris – After completing my BA (Political Science and German) I have worked in both large and small businesses across all functions, and developed an special expertise in growing businesses. I have worked internationally across Asia, Europe and Latin America.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Carter – About a year and a half ago, at 31, I had a massive stroke. Within minutes not only had I lost the use of the right side of my body but also the ability to communicate. I lost both the ability to speak as well as gesture, such as a nod or pointing at things. That started my long road to recovery. I relearned how to walk and use my hands. I also started with speech basics: phonics, syllables, words, and after three months, complete sentences.
Thankfully I fully recovered from my stroke and I can’t wait to share my experience with students. Learning English is tough, and I had to learn it twice. Since I have recently relearned English, I can effectively highlight the importance of phonics, different learning styles, and education despite obstacles.
