Meet Christopher Everett of Speller Street Films

Today we’d like to introduce you to Christopher Everett.

Christopher, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I started my career in film in front on the camera. I was an actor for five years in the Southeast then transitioned to behind the camera as a filmmaker. “Wilmington on Fire,” a documentary that chronicles the 1898 Wilmington Massacre, was my first major documentary film project.

My film career is going very well today. “Wilmington on Fire” has won several awards over the past four years and has screened at several institutions and film festivals. The film is currently available on Amazon Prime, Vimeo On Demand, and KweliTV. I’ve also had the pleasure of producing other film projects such as “Black Beach/White Beach,” a documentary on the two segregated bike festivals in Myrtle Beach, and also “The Black Baptism, an afro-futuristic reflection on Black Women’s fear and liberation. I’m currently filming “Wilmington on Fire: Chapter II,” a martial arts documentary “Grandmaster,” and I begin production in January 2021 on the radical narrative feature “A Saintly Madness.” I’m also releasing the underground cult film “As an Act of Protest” on October 30 on Vimeo On Demand. My curatorial work is going well also. I co-founded BLK Docs, an initiative to help build an authentic documentary film culture within the African American community through virtual screenings and panel discussions.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It’s always a struggle as an artist. It doesn’t matter what the medium is either. But as a filmmaker, the struggle has always been funding but you have to figure out ways to monetize and generate your own money to invest in your film projects and also figuring out the grant world to be able to tap into those resources and funds.

Please tell us more about your work. What do you do? What do you specialize in? What sets you apart from competition?
Speller Street Films is the company that I founded back in 2016 when I released my first documentary, “Wilmington on Fire.” I’m a film director, film producer, and film marketing, specialist. We produce high-quality media that ranges from documentaries, narratives, shorts, and episodic content. Known for the documentary “Wilmington on Fire.”

I’m most proud of the films that we make and the impact that they have on society. I’m also proud of the talented filmmakers that we work with (cinematographers, composers, etc.) that go on to do great things in Hollywood. What sets us apart from other film companies is that we embrace being indie. We live independence. We breathe independence.

Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
The most important quality or characteristic that has been important to my success has been patience. You have to be patient in this business. It’s a slow process but you have to be patient while you work hard and it will pay off. Trust me.
