Meet Colin Carew of Colibri Healin in East Atlanta

Today we’d like to introduce you to Colin Carew.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I am originally from British Guyana in South America. I came to the States around the age of ten with dance on my mind and in my heart. The first thing I saw on my first television was the Alvin Ailey Dance company and I was in love again. I danced with several dance companies in the states before heading to Europe to teach dance and live. I lived in Florence, Amsterdam, and Paris. When I was in my teens, I had my first heart attack on the tennis court at a high school tennis match. That would end up being number 1 of 6 heart attacks that I have survived.

Although many of them were not severe, it was still a life changer. It changed my desires in life. With that and the energy from my daughter, I shifted my energy from dance to cleaning my emotions through movement and the use of plant medicines from the jungles. I am indigenous to the Wapishana Native peoples of Guyana. The traditions that I came from through my indigenous roots are the part of what makes me who I am today. I am known as an Onanya or ancestral healer. I work with many different plant medicines from the jungles of South America as well as medicines from the North. My teachers are from many different traditions and their teachings live within me.

I spent many years traveling to and spending time in the jungles of Peru to train with my teachers in preparation for this work. What I mean to say is that the work starts with self and then extends to others. I lived in Canada for the last 6 1/2 years on and off and visited Georgia several times for work. I moved to Atlanta in October of 2017 and have enjoyed being here getting to know the communities of like-minded spiritual people as well as connecting with now amazing friends. I am a life coach as well as a medicine worker using the coaching as an integration tool after the inner work. A lot of the work I do is in the field of rites of passage. This is one of my goals in moving to Atlanta. I would like to bring back the sacred joy of ritual without all the layers that rob us of our spirits true callings. We all have something to heal. There are so many ways to do. Thing. Let’s do it with love.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I have been through many struggles moving through this life whiles learning about myself. One of the challenges in gaining a deeper relationship with self is that the reflections from all become a bit clearer and people in life become great mirrors to learn from. A while back I did not have my daughter in my life the way I wanted and that was a very challenging journey emotionally to endure but it gave me strength and resolve about what she meant to me and why she had to be everything or the center of my life for me to find my center.

When I was in my late 20’s, I suffered from intense depression and tried to commit suicide. The plan was to jump off a building. I remembered looking at the ground for a while till I started thinking that it would hurt. Lol. Throughout life, I lost many dear friends and teachers from many different issues and diseases. Watching the world has also been a challenge at times. But, this is why I have not had a television for almost 20 years now. At this stage of the game I refuse to even use the word struggle or hard to describe the test we create for our own growth. The accountability factor within me has risen and the once struggle has become optional.

Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Colibri Healin – what should we know?
The name of my company is Colibri Healin. The name represents and came from my own healing journey and its ebbs and flows much like the movement of a hummingbird which is what Colibri means. First, I am a life coach who offers many unconventional ways of moving through your rights of passage aka what you create and what you do with it. I am also a traditional medicine man who utilizes many different healing modalities to bring back the essence of a being. The plant do the work and I just open the door. I am known for doing many personal retreats for the Atlanta community as well as the group retreats around the world. I have had retreats in many beautiful places in the world but the most amazing one happens to me every day inside of me.

I believe the work that needs to be done starts inside and your outside can’t be what you desire until then. I believe what makes my work different is that it is based on a common a sense that we all are attuned to in some way that connects to the reality of the what we all desire. The fact that we still have to struggle for our basics is a crime alone. One of the most important things for me that I have seen within the spiritual communities is the Avatar of spirituality that pulls you away from you. If there is always a suit to step into but when will we claim the ones we came in? I do my best to keep dumbing down the spiritual bs machine that was created to further pull us from our true nature.

Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
I believe that commitment has been the backbone of my success and work. This work is tough, and the hours are long. The commitment has to be balanced with what is needed to continue showing up. Knowing that I don’t know enough to know what is to be known is always a good way of checking in with life. Making struggling optional in life is a good way to keep it 100 and level up your word choice in any moment. Knowing that there is always a story that will trump yours and the humility it takes to know your place and serve from that place with all your heart. Honesty, love, compassion, health, and family. Family is super important.
