Today we’d like to introduce you to Connie Jo Miller.
Connie, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
My life as a bookkeeper and financial coach is actually my third career. My first career was as a mechanical engineer working at Bechtel designing components of power plants. I also worked at Kodak as a manufacturing engineer and then transitioned into corporate training. When my son was born I left the engineering world behind and became a full-time mom. Two years later I had a daughter; my “mom world” was complete. When my son turned four I started my second career as a homeschooling mom. I homeschooled both my kids from birth through high school. As both kids entered college, I started on my third and final career in bookkeeping and financial coaching. I always wanted to own my own business and now that dream has come true.
I’ve always loved numbers, an absolute must for a bookkeeper. I also love puzzles. The trickier the better. The hunt for the clues, the hints that help you figure out what the clues mean, putting the clues together, and then solving the puzzle. One of my greatest joys in life is helping someone find a solution to something that has bewildered them. I think it’s fun to solve challenging issues, which bookkeeping ultimately is. Since I become so familiar with a clients numbers and how they spend and make money, I can often find ways for them to save money in their day to day business transactions. Win-Win!
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Starting my own business was not a smooth road. My biggest obstacle has been having the confidence in myself that is a must for any entrepreneur. The way I have been able to get past that is to surround myself with people that believe in me and with other entrepreneurs that are going through the same things I am. I learned very quickly that I am not unique in doubting and second guessing myself. It is pretty much universal for all entrepreneurs at one time or another.
Please tell us about Enigma Bookkeeping Solutions.
My business is Enigma Bookkeeping Solutions. I do bookkeeping and financial coaching serving primarily coaches and other solopreneurs. My business services are different from a traditional bookkeeping service. I do the traditional data entry and reconcile accounts, but I also act as a financial coach and partner to my clients by answering any financial questions they have and helping them to identify ways to save money and reduce their tax burden.
The financial part of a business is very personal to most people. Being able to trust the person who is working with your finances is vital. An incredible relationship with that person is vital. Everyone I serve knows that they can trust me with the most personal part of their business and that I will always be looking out for their best interest.
Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
My favorite memory from childhood is taking a train trip with my grandfather, Charles Wesley Taylor. I was 5 years old. We traveled from Goldsboro, North Carolina to Lexington, Kentucky. I can still see the fold down bed and the beautiful gray suitcase I got special for the trip. It was the only time that I spent time alone with my grandfather.
