Meet Corina Armstrong of HairbyCorina in Conyers

Today we’d like to introduce you to Corina Armstrong.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I’ve been fascinated with hair for as long as I can remember, growing up in Detroit, MI hair was always a big part of my culture. I have 3 older sisters and I remember being little and my oldest sister would sit me on the couch with her and I would be in between her legs and she would cross her leg over my lap so I wouldn’t move while she did my hair lol I would always think “I can’t wait until I’m old enough to do my own hair”. She would never do it right, in my opinion, lol. If she wasn’t doing my hair it was my grandma and you can only imagine the styles she did. My older sister worked in a hair salon as an assistant when she was 16 and I couldn’t wait until I was old enough to so I could be around hair and at the salon all day like her lol I remember being nine years old doing this hairstyle called “popcorns” on people hair in our neighboorhood. Its a method where you part boxes in an afro and put a rubber band around it and it looked liked popcorn balls all over lol and once their hair was long enough I would start doing cornrolls. Fast forward all through middle school and high school it was me and YouTube everyday.. some times every week. Doing my own hair. I would even try styles on my sisters and bestfriends. In 2009 I moved to Georgia and I started doing more natural styles like braids and dreadlocks. I graduated from Rockdale County High School in 2011 and went to Gordon college for two semesters, I was studying criminal justice. I wanted so bad to go to cosmetology school when I graduated from high school but I had a lot of people pushing me the other way and I was really discouraged so I went to school and guess what… I was doing hair in between classes lol coming home on the weekends and doing hair until I was just like, Let me stay home and work on my dream… my passion. I enjoyed Criminal Justice, but it’s a feeling I get from hair that’s indescribable, I know this is why God put me here on earth. In 2015 I decided that I was going to run as fast as I can into my dream. I started perfecting my crafting, braiding more, doing more dreads, researching products, trying different products. I met some amazing hairstylist that taught me things and showed me things that I will take with me forever and ever. I worked as an assistant at a salon for a summer in 2017. I was able to work in two salons as a braider, one in Decatur, GA and one in Tucker, GA and I’ll be forever grateful for that experience. I feel as a natural hairstylist, I will always continue to learn new ways to perfect my craft and display my art on my amazing clients. Right now I have a steady clientele, some of my clients have been with me since 2012 and 2013, that’s a different kind of loyalty. I always tell people I love my clients but I don’t think they understand how much I really love and appreciate them, all of them. They motivate me, they inspire me and they let me be creative. They even fly from different states for me, what more can I ask for. I love them and I love doing hair soooooooo much. I have some great things in store for my clients. And some amazing art to show the world.

Has it been a smooth road?
Not at all. Being that I’m a self-taught artist, a lot of people didn’t give me the chance I wanted in the earlier stages of my hair career. I had to really work hard to put my name and my brand out there, I didn’t have a school name to attach to my work. I just had my God-given talent and a dream. And as the song goes “im moving closer to my dreams”.

We’d love to hear more about your business.
My business HairByCorina specializes in locs and braids. Im recently becoming really known for doing dreadlocks. Those are my babies, my heart. I’m most proud of my growth with those these past years. What sets me apart from most is the passion, TLC, and time I put into my art, my locs especially.

Is our city a good place to do what you do?
YES! When I first moved here, I really didn’t appreciate all this city has to offer, but this is honestly the perfect place for a growing entrepreneur. I would definitely recommend them starting here, just have a plan. Its a lot going on here and you can get lost in the sauce but if you have a plan remain focus and stick to it and remember what your goal is and you’ll be alright.
