Today we’d like to introduce you to Kinsey and Shantana.
Kinsey and Shantana, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
We both have always had the entrepreneurial spirit and the desire to try new things. We meet through work, quickly became friends and shortly after roommates. At the time, we were both at a crossroads in our life and desired a change of pace. Over time we shared our goals and realized that some were parallel. one of the major goals being owning a business. With the onset of the pandemic, we had more time to put our ideas together and bring them to life and friends became business partners.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
I knew that starting a business during the pandemic would be difficult. The obstacles range from financial, mental, physical, all while initiating personal growth at the same time. Balancing finances and investing to maintain inventory and being in a leadership position at work is very difficult. Even with all the obstacles, the goal remained constant. So every day as long as I stay passionate about “The Corner Store,” I am able to guide myself through the struggles. (Kinsey)
Life itself is all about balance and starting/running a business requires a lot of balance as well as discipline and patience. Between juggling work, family, social time and setting aside money to invest. Ultimately it came down to believing in ourselves and seeing the bigger picture outside of the day to day ups and downs. The positive feedback we received from our customers and just seeing the improvements of the products brings us joy. The road hasn’t been smooth but it has been worth it. (Shantana)
The Corner Store 20k Lp – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
Our dream for “The Corner Store” is to be one-stop-shop of handcrafted, made with love products. The Corner Store specializes in body care, aromatherapy, and gift sets. Currently, our inventory includes scented Shea butter, body oil, lipgloss, candles, beard oil, beard shampoo, room spray, white sage, “spa boxes,” gift sets and waist beads. We are constantly working on improving what we have and expanding our product inventory.
We are most proud of the fact that despite all of the struggles, we keep trying and working. We just want to make products that buyers will love and enjoy. What sets us apart is the variety of products that we have and we utilize all-natural products. Not only that but we are two aspiring black women working together to make our dreams come true.
What is “success” or “successful” for you?
Success to me is peace, there isn’t a dollar amount or position that equals success. Being successful is a state of mind, waking up and being proud of what you do and going to be ready and prepared for what’s to come. Success is able to take what you know and what you love and share it with the world. (Shantana)
When I set a goal, the first action I take is a marker for success, simply getting started is a celebration. One step pushes me to another and another until I reach my ultimate goal. It is important to me that I don’t become complacent. Success isn’t stagnant, it is a constant pursuit towards your goals. (Kinsey)
