Meet Cory Jones

Today we’d like to introduce you to Cory Jones.

Hi Cory, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
Well, I’ve always loved taking photos. even in baby pictures, I always had a camera with me. So it really started from the beginning. I never really took it seriously until about 4 or 5 years ago, though. I really started diving into why film interested me so much. I bought my first film camera at about 17 and just never stopped shooting. In recent years I started taking it more and more into my own hands with editing and developing and making darkroom prints and all that, though.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back, would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It’s never a smooth path for a film photographer, honestly. I remember I shot four rolls of film before I got it right and had a roll come out. I do big mess-ups all the time, so it’s never a smooth path. That’s the fun part, though, making mistakes and turning them into something extraordinary. learning. Its very, very important to keep going when you have a good feeling about something.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I am a strict film photographer. I shoot medium and 35mm format film, develop and make darkroom prints all in my home studio. I feel like I know for that honestly, everyone that knows me for my artwork knows me and film go hand in hand. I am proud to be a all-film shooter because I feel like the colors of the film really catch people’s eyes. It’s the nostalgia of it all I feel like. That’s what I try to portray in my work at least. I like to try and bring people back to a fond memory with the photos I create. Bring them back in time as much as I can, you know? I feel like a lot of people are back shooting film these days, which I love, but what sets me apart is shooting film and trying to make memories with film are different. I am aiming to make memories through my work.

What would you say have been one of the most important lessons you’ve learned?
To always lock your car doors lol. No I’m just playing, but really I learned that hard work really does pay off. After getting my camera stolen this year, the community of artists and art lovers around me came up with the money to replace it so I could continue to do what I love, and that is something that will stick with me forever. People recognized how hard I work at my craft and it feels good to know that really putting in the extra time pays off. Always give it you’re all!
