Today we’d like to introduce you to Craig Moore.
Craig, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
Old 4th Distillery is the first distillery in the city of Atlanta since 1906. We opened in 2014 and started by launching our handmade Vodka. We have since launched a Gin and Lawn Dart Ginger Lemon Liqueur. The company was founded by brothers Jeff and Craig Moore. We have been entrepreneurs running other companies in Atlanta and in Old Fourth Ward since 2006. In 2012, when we happened upon the knowledge that Atlanta had not had a distillery since before prohibition, we decided to end that injustice. We always dreamed of owning our own brand and felt this was the perfect opportunity.
Since our launch, we have quickly become the largest distillery in Georgia by sales volume. Now that the laws have changed in Georgia (Sept 1) – we now have the ability to operate as a bar and a bottle shop. This is a game changer for all breweries and distilleries in Georgia. For that reason, we are bullish on our public space and will be adding a second location in 2019. Also in 2019, we will be launching our 4 years old Bourbon.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Smooth? Has any small business owner ever answered that question in the affirmative? Every road has bumps and potholes, and ours is no different. I think we have been most surprised by the amount of capital that it takes to launch a new spirits brand, and effectively – we have launched three with our Vodka, Gin and Lawn Dart. There are many spirits brands that are just that, a brand. Not saying that it is good or bad, but if you don’t have to make your product from scratch, you can focus on the marketing, advertising, etc. We have to do those things, but we also have to manage the logistics of manufacturing our products from scratch.
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Old Fourth Distillery story. Tell us more about the business.
We make handcrafted southern spirits. We are proud that we have gotten to where we are today being self-funded and for having achieved the status of the largest distillery in the State of Georgia by sales volume. We take pride in making all of our products by hand and for sticking to our beliefs.
Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
Not sure if I believe in luck, but the timing has been fortuitous for us. We have done well in real estate and have also seized upon opportunities that might look lucky in hindsight.
