Thanks for sharing your story with us Crystal. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I started out by making a decision to follow the one thing that I loved since very young, the Beauty Industry. I was always into makeup, fashion, and hair but really found my niche when I started doing my own hair. As I started doing more of my friends and family’s hair, I knew there were a calling and a gift I had that I didn’t yet understand at the time. My love for hair grew when I started working in hair salons, attending Hair Shows, taking classes on different techniques, finding that the industry was a true passion I had unveiled. With that, my business partner, Lakisha and I decided to go step out on faith and start our own business. Giving our clients a safe place to come knowing that their healthy hair journey and well being would be taken care of in a professional and carefree manner!
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
The road has definitely been a road with many turns, twist, ups and downs! Because New Serenity started out with faith and very little start-up, I can say it taught me the reality of operating a business while working for yourself. Along with having so many other roles, such as being a mother of three, it was not easy and at times, I felt like giving up, getting a full-time job, taking the easy way out… but God said not so. Every time I tried, a client would contact me out of the blue to thank me for just being who I am to them besides me caring for their hair. That meant a lot to me, it actually motivated me as a person and pushed me to know that what I do is not just hair but a movement changing lives in so many ways, I had no clue of in the past.
New Serenity Hair Salon – what should we know? What do you do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
New Serenity Hair Salon is a Hair Salon that specializes in Healthy Haircare, Natural Haircare, and moving towards treating Hair loss issues soon that are so prominent in the Hair Industry. I am the owner as well as a Master Cosmetologist for the business. I am known for my Silk press, Bridal services, and Freelance Hairstyling, I am also a Certified Colorist of Pravana Hair coloring Systems. I am most proud of the growth and being able to sufficiently work for myself on my own time. It has definitely been a blessing in my life being a mother, wife, mentor, and so many other roles. New Serenity Hair Salon sets apart from other hair salons just by the name which stands firm in the atmosphere of the salon. Being able to come in, relaxing, decompress, while treating yourself with VERY minimal overbooking will ensure you with a much-needed hair care experience every time at New Serenity Hair Salon!
What is “success” or “successful” for you?
I define success as keeping God first, not giving up, remaining humble and understanding that the road to a successful business is not only revenue but what you stand for as a business, how you treat your clients and keeping faith even through the tough times that will come regardless. I also believe knowing how to handle the rough times uproots, whether your business will fall or keep standing.
