Today we’d like to introduce you to Crystal Smith.
Hi Crystal, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
Before the Pandemic, I had never even thought about becoming a Photographer. During the first quarantine, while I was working from home, I read many articles that said you should find a new skill or discover a new hobby. In April 2020, I decided to buy a camera. I knew nothing about photography. I begin to do research and study the skill and art of photography. Instead of doing it as a hobby, I decided to start a Photography Business. I started by just taking pictures of my two sons and posting them on Social Media. My Graphic Designer created a logo and put my logo on my pictures. My first client was a person who asked me to take Mother’s Day pictures for her in May 2020. After that, more and more people began to reach out to me to take family photos and headshots. I started doing studio photography in my kitchen. Then I found a room to rent in September 2020. I used that room to do Studio Headshots and other projects. In May 2021, I got my own 1625 square foot studio. I typically have between 30-50 clients per month now. I do Outdoor and Studio photography for individual clients as well as schools, churches and community organizations.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It has not been a smooth road at all. I quit my day job to do photography full-time. There are some days that I wonder if I made a mistake. There are weeks that I am busy and there are also weeks that my phone does not ring.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I love individual outdoor photography. Working with individuals gives me space and freedom to create poses and capture beautiful lighting from the sun. I love to help my clients relax and feel like I will guide them through the process. Many people are not comfortable in front of the camera. It is my job to help them to have fun!
What sort of changes are you expecting over the next 5-10 years?
I plan to travel and have clients in other states and countries. I have recently started a One-on-One Photography Class for Beginners. I am already booked to teach the class in the DC area this summer.
