Meet Crystal Spellman of Spellman Consulting Group

Today we’d like to introduce you to Crystal Spellman.

Crystal, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
Prior to starting Spellman Consulting Group in August of 2014, it had been my intention to start a project management consulting company, but I kept putting it off and putting it off until reality struck. It was late 2013 when I received a call informing me that my mother had passed away in her sleep. This was unexpected, no warning, no anything!

It was after my mother’s passing that I realized if there is something in life that I want to accomplish or achieve that I had better get busy doing it because tomorrow is not promised. In early 2014 I began working as a project management consultant and later that year, started Spellman Consulting Group.

It was soon after starting the company that we received our first subcontract to provide project management and IT governance services to a large federal agency here in Atlanta. This led to subsequent subcontracts with the same agency.

In 2016, we received a prime contract to lead the project management efforts on the implementation of an ERP system for a school district in middle Georgia. During the latter part 2017, Spellman Consulting Group was awarded another subcontract to provide project management and IT business process review support to another federal agency in Washington, DC.

We have grown over the last few years and are excited about the opportunity to provide IT and business solutions to more organizations within the state of Georgia and throughout the US.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
As a small company in the IT industry, we have faced obstacles of not being big enough and not having the resources to compete with larger companies. To overcome this, we’ve developed strategic partnerships with larger IT companies which has allowed us to be more competitive in the market.

Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Spellman Consulting Group – what should we know?
Spellman Consulting Group is an IT and business consulting company that provides solutions to federal, state, and local governments, school districts, and commercial organizations. Our specialty is IT project management and IT governance.

It is through our use of project management best practices that we are able to:

o Conduct detailed analysis of your IT portfolio and your IT organization to ensure it aligns with the strategic goals
o Provide viable solutions to optimize the strategic alignment and operational efficiency of your IT portfolio
o Implement IT project management best practices
o Provide customized project management training for your organization’s project management staff
o Establish new and improve your IT processes and procedures
o Manage IT development projects using an Agile methodology

I’m most of proud of the way our project managers tailor the project management approach to fit the needs of the organization. Not all projects are alike and not all organizations have the same needs!

What sets us apart is that we are a project management organization that is security focused. It is very important that all IT systems are secure and protect the data and information of individuals that may be stored and accessible through these systems.

Our project managers have experience developing security plans and working with IT security teams to ensure the appropriate security controls are in place to prevent system vulnerabilities.

Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
The quality that is most important to our success is the ability to communicate effectively.

Great communication is key to the success of every project! We believe that every good project begins with a solid communication plan.
