Today we’d like to introduce you to Curtis Bryant.
Every artist has a unique story. Can you briefly walk us through yours?
After a challenging and transformative 2017, God encouraged me to move Atlanta. I moved here on October 13th, 2017, with no job or living arrangement. The past year and a half has been extremely humbling, surprising, spiritually awakening, and fulfilling.
For 28 years, New York City was the only place I knew. That’s where I’m from originally (the Bronx to be exact). It was in New York, where I built a brand, graduated from Parsons, and found and lost myself multiple times.
As I continue to navigate and learn Atlanta, me and my work are constantly changing. It’s here in Atlanta, that I know I will make an impact, not for what I can creatively but for the connections I make with the community. Community which, isn’t limited to just creatives either.
Please tell us about your art.
The truth is, different people know me for different things, and I like it that way.
Growing up, when someone asks you, “What do you want to be when you grow up?” We limit ourselves to one answer. It’s not until we’re older than we realize that I can be many things. We are made layered. We are made versatile if we tap into it.
To some, I’m a Photographer, to other’s I’m a Graphic Designer, to some I’m a Creative Director, too many I’m a Healer/Tarot Card Reader and to my boss Laura Adams at Brickworks Gallery, I’m a Gallery Assistant.
No matter what medium it was. People take away, authenticity. I make it fun and true to me.
Given everything that is going on in the world today, do you think the role of artists has changed? How do local, national, or international events and issues affect your art?
This world is a very crazy place these days, right? And because of how the world turns, art will always be the answer. Let’s be clear, whether you’re a visual artist, a writer, a musician, a singer or a rapper, we all are saving this world in a way or another.
I’ve seen Billy Porter of FX’s “Pose” say multiple times, and I’m paraphrasing… Art is always the first to go because it inspires and encourages conversation and change.
Social media has made us all influencers. Some use this power for good, while others use it for just fame, but even in that, they’re inspiring someone.
Over recent years, under this Trump administration, I find that writing and watching The View, have been my safe place. I personally like to make sure that if I’m going to speak about something, I know what I’m speaking about and I really have a stance. Starting today and forevermore, it is important that artist and creatives are intentional, with the work they put out.
