Today we’d like to introduce you to Cynthia Walker.
Cynthia, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
My love for helping people started my senior year in high school. I became the first student worker at a local bank in my hometown. As a student, I was introduced to deposits, loan processing, and various consumer programs offered by financial institutions. When I left the bank to start college, I knew I had to get my degree in finance and share what I would learn with family and friends. After acquiring a bachelor’s in finance, I was eager to learn more and become an expert in my field. My journey to teaching financial literacy started in 2015. In 2017, I started reading well-known finance literature, teaching myself how to effectively create pivot tables, and posting little finance gems on my personal Facebook page. That’s when I discovered that so many people were financially illiterate to the basics of personal finance. I started to become very passionate about posting information for my followers and answering their questions. It’s my belief that God blessed me with this knowledge to convey to others.
In 2019, I finished my MBA in finance and established FINLIT, LLC.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Since establishing FINLIT, LLC, one major struggle I faced was content creation. I wanted to distribute information that appeals to all levels of learning. I had to really sit down and brainstorm. How can I teach a topic so a novice, intermediate, and advanced learner may comprehend it? Once I figured that out, I started “FINLITWEEKLY”.
This tool is used to educate free of charge.
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the FINLIT story. Tell us more about the business.
FINLIT, LLC is a financial consulting business.
Our Mission is to educate and empower young, working professionals in making reasonable decisions regarding their personal finances and introduce new opportunities to reach their personal goals. We specialize in creating budgets, assisting in starting emergency funds, and performing customized financial analysis per a client’s request. We are known for a credit packet that we created and sold for $5 each. All proceeds were matched and donated to a non-profit. It was such a great success that we decided to revamp and add to it for a 2020 re-release in the coming months. I am most proud of the trust I was able to build as an individual that has resulted in the success of my company. I haven’t had any worries about confidential information being leaked or shared outside of the company and clients. All of the testimonials on the website have been volunteered from my clients. They are eager to share how FINLIT, LLC has helped them. We are equipped to service clients in all states. One-third of our clients reside in the Atlanta midtown area.
Our Vision is to aim in assisting individuals with moderate income backgrounds in reaching their maximum potential in managing their personal finances, reducing debt, and building wealth through determination and education.
Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
The role of luck! I am not a believer of luck but I do believe in finding your purpose and living in it. I may be wrong but I truly believe financial literacy is my purpose. If we must speak on luck, I’d say it started the day I walked into my local bank and asked to speak to the President of the bank. I was just a senior in high school but I walked in that bank with a new suit, a big smile, my report card, letters of recommendation from prominent members of the community, and confidence out of this world. I was really shocked that the president chose to speak to me. He could have easily brushed me off. I introduced myself and asked him whether they were hiring. He stated that although he was very impressed with my presentation and demeanor, they didn’t hire anyone under 18, I was 17 at the time. I had no hard feelings and thanked him for meeting with me and asked him to hold on to my resume and other documents for future opportunities. He obliged. That following Monday, I received a call from the president of the bank. He informed me that since I was a month away from turning 18, he was able to get my hiring approved. At that moment, I knew God placed me there for a reason and this was the start of my journey.
