Meet Cyrus Joseph of The SugarMill in Conyers

Today we’d like to introduce you to Cyrus Joseph.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I got started in the industry about nine years ago. Growing up as a child my mother would always bake different desserts everything from breads, cobblers and cakes. I really didn’t have much interest at the time but I guess you can say I got received the gift and talent from her. The Sugarmill was created nine years ago and initially I was working out of the home whilst still maintaining a full-time job. As the business grew and my skills improved, I became more confident in my skill set. In 2017, I left my job of 16 years to embark on opening the Sugarmills first storefront.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
One of the biggest challenges is just getting your name out there and getting the community to trust you. There are always challenge of trying to figure the market and accommodate customer needs. But other than that God has been good to us and it has been smooth ride.

The SugarMill, Inc. – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
The concept of The Sugarmill came from the island of St. Croix where I grew up. In the 1800’s The US virgin islands especially St. Croix was responsible for over 80% of sugar export to the world. Till this day these Sugarmill structures still stand as a reminder of the islands history. Over 250 Sugarmill still exists till this day. I am owner and baker of The SugarMill Inc. we specialize in pastries, cakes and cheesecakes. What makes me most proud is the fact that we have been blessed with a great family structure and the ability to see how much the company has grown within the nine years span.

What is “success” or “successful” for you?
When owning a retail business, I can only assume that turning a profit would be a mile marker for success. But for me, I define success by overcoming any areas of opportunity that may hold me back or meeting company and personal goals. At the end of the day, I want to be a better businessman than I was when I turned on the lights that morning. Also making customers happy.
