Today we’d like to introduce you to Dacia Ruth.
Hi Dacia, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
Born and raised in Chicago, after recently losing both grandparents, experiencing some upsets in close relationships, and being laid off from a job – I took a leap of faith and moved to Atlanta in 2017. I bought a one-way ticket to visit my boyfriend at the time and as life would play out I just never left. I flew Spirit with one Louis Vuitton Neverfull GM bag. I had no car, no apartment, and had exhausted my savings.
So, I landed on my feet and, with the help of my new love interest, quickly secured a new corporate job but I was miserable and continuously stressed. The traffic and daily commute alone almost sent me off a cliff. Atlanta, If you know then you know! I knew I had more to offer and wanted to pursue my life-long desire to follow in the footsteps of my parents and run my own company. I had this vision to create a platform and resources for women to thrive and be confident in their God-given abilities.
I officially started GloGirl World, LLC in 2018 and launched a faith-based t-shirt line. Word traveled and I found myself managing my new shirt business while working full-time. Approximately one year later, I remember leaving the office for an early lunch break because I had to pick up a shirt in order to ship out. I was exhausted and unhappy and in the car with tears in my eyes crying out to God saying, “I know there’s more to my life than this! God, I don’t want to just work a 9-5 like this anymore.” And God heard me. What I didn’t realize is that as soon as I returned from that lunch break, I was going to be laid-off again.
When I moved to Atlanta, I really craved community and kept searching for a tribe but couldn’t find a women’s circle that fit me. Just like everyone, I appreciate nice clothes and luxury experiences but I did not want to join circles that only focused on monetary gain and outward appearances. I needed more to fuel me.
I started hosting online events to talk, connect, and create safe spaces for healing and empowerment so that we could live boldly in purpose. Unbeknownst to me, I began to grow a community of my own. A circle of interdependent and fierce women who were willing to show up and just BE. So often people are afraid of being judged, misunderstood, or misaligned; so we hide. In my circles of intergenerational mentorship, thought-provoking conversations began to free us to move about with intention and impact.
That love interest in 2017 turned into my husband. And since then I’ve built a successful business coaching platform where I mentor purpose-driven entrepreneurs; established a thriving GloGirl community, and hosted my very first RestoreHer Women’s Retreat in Atlanta, GA. I am building a legacy for women to feel seen, heard, and empowered to go out and light up this world. I look forward to releasing my upcoming podcast, The Coaching Podcast, and developing a new GloGirl World YouTube series to highlight the conversations we tend to shy away from.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It definitely has not been a smooth road to defining my own path. I have had to turn down many amazing opportunities that did not align with my personal values and brand. I always lead with my convictions. For that reason, I had to walk away from a position at a music label to work with a rap artist from Chicago who ended up becoming a rap celebrity. I’ve also had to turn down a co-host position at, now, one of the top leading business podcasts in the country. I’ve even walked away from a million-dollar deal to be #2 at a start-up company that eventually signed Kobe Bryant as a brand partner. I’ve made HUGE sacrifices to remain true to myself and my calling. I’m confident that the payout of transforming lives outweighs the temporary challenges I’ve faced over the years. I will always take the road less traveled if it means choosing my values.
Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
GloGirl World, LLC provides brand consulting for corporations, business coaching for purpose-driven business owners. We cultivate community and host events to empower Black women to walk boldly in purpose and shine unapologetically in Christ.
What was your favorite childhood memory?
I was very active as a kid and loved playing music and singing. I was in a city youth choir and traveled locally and abroad to sing including Vienna, Austria. My love for travel and exploring new places started very early.
