Today we’d like to introduce you to Dagem Adane.
Dagem, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
My story began at a young age when I would sneak into my father’s room to try on his watches. Of course, it did not fit, but I loved the feeling and confidence it gave me. I think it was more than the watch itself. The timepiece was a symbol of my father which I cherished. My father exemplified the sweetest fruits in life. He was the personification of love, empathy, confidence, and resilience. Although my father (Adane) is no longer here physically, his spirit fortified. I’ve created the ADANƎ brand to pay homage to my father, and I’m now able to share remnants of him in each one of my watches. The mission of ADANƎ is to instill honor and cultivate legacy globally. Through fashion and accessories, I seek to convey that simplicity is the pinnacle of elegance and love has no bounds.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Nothing worth it comes easy. I’m sure we’ve all heard that. Well, it’s true. I love what I do, but being an entrepreneur has its ups and downs. I learn something new every day. The hardest part was starting. I think we all have great ideas, but we doubt ourselves so much. This may be due to our own insecurities or the circle of friends we surround ourselves with. I stalled for over a year because I was afraid of rejection, and the simple fact that the possible failure of this business will be associated with me. To be honest, the death of Nipsey Hussle pushed me to launch and deal with the outcome. We’re a young company (Launched June 10, 2019). For all the people who have a dream or goal, I encourage you to just start. Don’t live your life living someone else’s belief.
Please tell us about Adanelegacy.
At ADANƎ, we design elegant, premium, minimalist watches for any occasion. Our mission is to use a portion of every purchase to stand behind a cause that is empowering the human spirit. We want to give our customers the opportunity to build a community of doers. We stand firm on the belief that you are exactly who you believe you are.
Understanding that young boys and girls have little to no opportunity of living a decent life with an education or a means for independence, we set out to change the narrative in my native country, Ethiopia. With a promise to legacy and livelihood, the Adane Legacy company works closely with a non-profit organization, WEL, who’s focused on the growth and development of rural Ethiopian Towns. For every dollar earned, Adane Legacy proudly contributes part of the proceeds to WEL in efforts to build a primary school for young boys and girls of Ethiopia. The mission of Adane Legacy is to build a community that can sustain itself when the sun sets each day.
If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
I would try to network more and just reach out to people I know regarding entrepreneurship. I say this because it can be overwhelming at times. Having a clear roadmap of what you need to do is helpful. From getting your business license to creating your brand to understanding marketing campaigns. It’s definitely a lot, but you have to be patient and understand that you’re a student of the game and everything will work out as long as you keep striving and learning. It’s a marathon, not a sprint.
