Today we’d like to introduce you to Daisha and David Huiel.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
In 2018, I used to come home from work every night with a really bad skin irritation due to working outside in harsh weather conditions. Because I was stubborn and didn’t want to go to the dermatologist, I began my journey researching and testing recommended skin products. I tried multiple different brands of lotion, body creams, and skin oils, yet nothing worked. It wasn’t until I switched to using more natural products that I started to see and feel real improvement. It all started with me using raw shea butter and African black soap, which are the two main ingredients in our She Who Lives products, and Daisha began mixing them with other natural products. Daisha began getting creative with the mixtures and she started posting videos on social media of us making the body butter. We received a lot of great feedback and were bombarded with questions about if we were planning to sell our products. So we decided to launch our company and center it around self-care.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It definitely has not been an easy road whatsoever. On top of being full-time parents to a rambunctious three-year-old toddler, we are both full-time college students at Kennesaw State University whose major is African & African Diaspora studies. And I work full time. To say that we have our hands full is an understatement. Time always feels scarce, but we manage to meet our goals by staying organized and constantly communicating.
Please tell us about She Who Lives.
She Who Lives LLC is a Black family-owned small business based out of Marietta, Georgia. We are the creators of handcrafted artisan body products that cater specifically to melanin skin. We also provide African inspired Henna artistry services. Our products are crafted from ingredients that are ethically sourced and fairly traded. She Who Lives is committed to the empowerment and development of all people of the African Diaspora.
Our brand stands out because of the aesthetic look of our products. “She Who Lives” is the direct translation of the Arabic name “Daisha”. Our logo embodies the liberated growth of women with melanin skin. Our products are handcrafted from natural and organic butters, oils and soaps. The main ingredients of our products are ethically sourced directly from Benin, Ghana where women of the community are paid a fair and living wage for the production of their hard work.
Our Hydrate Me whipped body butter is crafted like no other. From the moment our light and fluffy whipped butter make contact with the skin, it begins to melt and absorb into your pores. Our butter leaves the skin hydrated and moisturized which creates a radiating healthy glow. The Cleanse Me: Clarifying Wash is made with African black soap, which is known for its many health and skin benefits as well. It provides a deep and exfoliating clean that inserts key nutrients back into the skin. What really makes this wash so special is that it is an excellent product for your body, face and hair as a shampoo.
Finally, we provide private and public henna events for every occasion from birthday parties and social engagements, to professional photography shoots and henna workshops.
