Meet Will Dalzell of Dalzell Design Landscaping in Augusta

Today we’d like to introduce you to Will Dalzell.

Will, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
Our company started in late 2008 in the economic downturn. I was working for another landscape company and they did not have any morals or values.

The owner and I were not seeing eye to eye due to this issue. My wife and I began saving all the extra money we had to start our business as we know our days were limited. I was terminated due to a disagreement and we had saved $5,500.00 see money. I used over half of it setting up the company with insurance and in an LLC. We had my personal truck, no equipment except some shovels and a trailer my father rented to me by the day.

We had no clients or work to speak of. I began to beat the doors down and reach out to all my contacts and started to get some jobs to work on. I relied on my degree in Landscape Architecture from UGA to set us above the rest in our design/build capabilities. Our business has bloomed since its humble beginnings. We have grown now into two different cities. We employee 35 people and still stick to our roots as being the premier outdoor living space designer/builders.

Has it been a smooth road?
No, it has not been smooth. We started in the economic downturn when the housing market was awful. It was tough even to find work then and at very small profit margins. Finding quality people who are loyal and with integrity is another struggle. We work hard to find quality people that help us design/build spaces that families will use for years to come.

So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Dalzell Design Landscaping story. Tell us more about the business.
We are the areas premier landscape design build and maintenance company. We specialize in outdoor living spaces and outdoor environments. We are known for our Core Values. Family, Sustainability, Creativity and Moxie drive all our projects. These values drive all our projects and people. This allows us to create spaces for our clients that will last a lifetime and they will enjoy forever with their family and friends. I am most proud of the body of work that we have made in the past years. This work is some of the most technical and creative around. Our ability to provide top quality, design to budgets, and create beautiful environments sets us apart from the rest. If we can visualize or dream it, then we can build it.

How do you think the industry will change over the next decade?
The big shift I see is more technology. All the outdoor living environments are getting smarter and smarter.

You can basically control everything from the touch of a button. I see this trend continuing to rise and also the trend of relationships. I think people want to be in real, lasting, personal relationships. Our spaces designed and constructed correctly allow for that.
