Meet Damaris Johnson of The Walk of Life Counseling Center in Brookhaven

Today we’d like to introduce you to Damaris Johnson.

Damaris, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I attended the University of Georgia for my undergraduate degree, and I initially majored in Biology because I thought I wanted to go to Pharmacy or Medical school. I quickly discovered that I did not enjoy my biology classes, and I remembered how much I enjoyed my AP Psychology class in high school.

So I started taking psychology courses as my electives and long story short, I switched my major to Psychology and actually began to enjoy my classes. The field of psychology really intrigued me, and I loved learning how the mind works. After graduation, I spent a couple of years exploring a few different jobs, and soon I decided to pursue my Master’s in Marriage and Family Therapy because I wanted to work directly with people and walk alongside them in their journey in life. In 2015, The Walk of Life Counseling Center was founded, and it has since then grown from an individual practice to a group practice. I am so grateful I have found such great purpose in my work. I get to work with individuals and couples as they pursue counseling to navigate challenging seasons. It is true when you find your life’s work… you never work a day in your life.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
It certainly has not been a smooth road, to say the least, but for sure well worth the bumps and bruises. I remember when my husband and I began to search for our first office, and soon after signing the lease I found out I was pregnant with our first child. I initial reaction was panic! We just signed this lease. How will this work if I am now going to have to take a maternity leave in a few short months? Fortunately, I have an incredibly supportive husband, and he reminded me that God would not bring us this far to just leave us. Our faith in God has always held us up in any difficult moment, and this would be no different. Sure enough, business was slow, but mostly because I was out sick my entire pregnancy and then I took a three-month maternity leave. Although it was a rocky start, I wouldn’t change anything. Being a mother, wife and professional has never been easy, but four years later and two babies later, I am very grateful for this journey.

So let’s switch gears a bit and go into The Walk of Life Counseling Center story. Tell us more about the business.
The Walk of Life Counseling Center is a private practice in North Brookhaven/Clairmont area, centered on individual, couples and family counseling. We are a group practice with a staff of excellent therapists who each have their own specialties. I specialize in couple’s counseling and women’s health including maternal mental health. Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
