Meet Dana SanMar

Today we’d like to introduce you to Dana SanMar.

Every artist has a unique story. Can you briefly walk us through yours?
I’m from a small town in Santander, Colombia. As far as I can remember, I’ve always made things with my hands including drawing and painting. I have always been curious of and an explorer of different techniques and processes, mainly inspired by my mom who has always had an artistic inclination and has been a huge inspiration and encouragement for me.

I decided to move to Bogotá to pursue a bachelor’s degree in graphic design and after I graduated, I used my acquired knowledge for local marketing. After realizing that graphic design wasn’t fulfilling for me, I came to the US for the first time as an Au Pair to learn English to be able to study abroad in the future. I had the fortune to live in NY during this time which was a big inspiration and a learning experience that pushed me to keep forward with my dream of becoming an illustrator. Today I’m proud to say that I’m meeting my goal given that right now I’m pursuing an MFA in illustration at SCAD.

Please tell us about your art.
I definitely feel inspired by nature and femininity, those are very recurring topics in my work. Also, I’m strongly influenced by Surrealism and Art Nouveau. The aim of my work is to create different worlds where strange and beautiful things are possible. I hope for my work to be a little window through which people can escape from daily routine; where they can pause and be able to dream for a moment and feel inspired.

We often hear from artists that being an artist can be lonely. Any advice for those looking to connect with other artists?
I’d say interacting with other artists online as well as commenting on their work can be of great benefit. As an artist it can be difficult to do networking but it’s crucial in order to grow, collaborate and to be successful. Also important is to support other growing artists by promoting and sharing their work.

How or where can people see your work? How can people support your work?
People can support my work by following me and sharing my work on the Internet. I can be found on Instagram and Behance as danasanmar.
