Today we’d like to introduce you to Dana Wilson.
Hi Dana, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
“This is it! This is exactly what I need for my life.” This is what I whispered to myself while surfing the internet at work. I so happened to come across a small hyperlink www.sisterlocks.com in late 1999. I was in shock and aww of the mere audacity that it could be possible to embrace my natural texture of my hair and it be styleable, beautiful and look expectable to the masses. This notion was life-changing.
I could not get enough of what was shared by the originator Dr. JoAnne Cornwell of Sisterlocks™. I viewed the gallery of pictures of African American women rocking, living in their own hair with confidence and beauty repeatedly. I could not get enough. I needed some of what they embodied like yesterday.
By January 2000, I was walking tall in my very own Sisterlocks™ while on active duty in the United States Air Force. Sisterlocks was a perfect pairing to my busy lifestyle. They allowed me to be fully expressed, free and the icing on top was I was within present military regulations.
The freedom I was experiencing fueled me to become a Certified Sisterlocks™ Consultant. It was a pure pleasure, honor and joy to escort others with tightly textured hair into the Sisterlocks Lifestyle. The Sisterlocks Lifestyle is acceptance of oneself. It is living without limiting what you do because of hair concerns. It is a great option to natural hair freedom for people with tightly textured hair.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
As a Sisterlocks consultant and then onto trainer, I observe some of my clients and others in general losing hair density. In fact, one of my clients chose to shave her head. She could no longer deal with the emotional toll of the failed attempts to save her locks.
I started to question why do people lose their hair? Then, I noticed changes in my own hair density, even with getting my regular maintenance that included retightening, shampooing and moisturizing on a consistent basis. I was confused and became self-conscious and fearful of losing all my hair.
I learned hair loss (Alopecia) is a disruption of the hair life cycle. So many things could be the root cause such as diet, hormonal imbalance, vitamin deficiencies, inflammation, and autoimmune disorders.
The idea that you could possibly stop and slow hair loss and intentionally regenerate new hair intrigued me. Now, off to Trichology (the study of scalp disorders, hair and hair loss) school, I went to deep dive into this concept and to become a Certified Trichologist.
My hair advocacy has now evolved into helping others that are suffering from scalp disorders and hair loss issues. I personally continue to fight for every hair strand and I am winning.
As you know, we’re big fans of Hair Cares – Every Strand Counts. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?

What was your favorite childhood memory?
I was about 11 years old when I had the notion to braid about 200 plats in my hair. I rolled and styled them for about month or so. I loved it! However, as weeks went by I noticed all the new growth. It was time to do it over. I remember thinking to myself as a girl, it would be cool if I did not have to take it down to refreshen it up. Over the years, I dabbled in all kinds of hair management systems. I tried relaxers, the Jheri curl and an afro just to name a few. So as an adult comprehending the Sisterlocks approach was a no-brainer. It did not take persuading me, I just needed to be clear about who, when and how much it would be to join the movement.
