Today we’d like to introduce you to Darrick Fisher.
Darrick, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I grew up in a small town in Tennessee with only 18,000 people. My passion growing up was golf & I always dreamed of playing on the PGA Tour until an injury in college derailed my golf career. I transferred to the University of Tennessee in 2015 and immediately fell in love with business. I completed 18 months of internships in the insurance space with State Farm & New York Life. My first two positions out of college were desk jobs and I was truly miserable.
I started my company in September & haven’t looked back since. Right now we have several clients in different sectors, we focus on helping small businesses with their social media accounts, their websites, and their sales strategy. Currently, I am a solo-trepreneur which means I am my companies only employee but in January our intern program begins & I will have around 50 individuals behind my mission of helping small businesses with their marketing.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Starting a business at 24 years old has been extremely difficult. Every day I face new challenges & obstacles. A week after starting my own business I found myself in the ER with terrible stomach pains. There have been weeks where everything has run smoothly and there have been weeks when almost everything went wrong. I have been working on my health diligently by taking my diet & fitness regimen very serious. It is very lonely as a small business owner, you don’t have co-workers to spend time with & your competition generally wants to do everything they can to make you give up or put obstacles in your way to make your business fail.
The most important trait in being a successful business owner is mental toughness. You never know what kind of curveballs are going to be thrown at you, so you have to be prepared to take on whatever comes your way. On top of that, positive self-talk is very important. If you constantly tell yourself that your contracts are going to fall through or your clients are going to leave you then you probably will stay up all night worrying, it’s best to have a plan for if things go wrong and handle your punches as they are thrown at you.
Fish Media Group – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
Fish Media Group is a full-service marketing agency that specializes in helping small businesses increase revenue by improving their social media accounts, their websites, and their sales strategy. Most marketing agencies select a niche, while we create tailored plans for each of our clients that are in different sectors & markets from one another. Every company needs help with different parts of their marketing mix, so we find out where our clients need help and then put strategies in place to turn our client’s weaknesses into some of their strengths.
What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
My favorite memory from a professional perspective is starting the first-ever Student Leadership Conference for the students within the Haslam College of Business at the University of Tennessee back in 2017. I turned an idea in my head into a real event that helped inspire just under 100 business students to grow their skill-set and get better. The event contained breakout sessions, a keynote, and a networking lunch with the 40 members of the Haslam Young Alumni Board. The event was planned again last fall by a student Jude Cypher and will occur again this Spring. A colleague of mine, Catie Waters, is planning the event this year. I hope the event continues for years to come & that UT will continue to support the event & ideas of other students who have big dreams like I did.
