Meet Darrion “KING.K” Benard of LWLSS in Westside

Today we’d like to introduce you to Darrion Benard.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Darrion. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
Hmm, that’s a good question, where do I begin? Straight outta Compton, but seriously that is where it started, the “Hub City” and everything it represents is rooted in me. Pain, struggle, trauma, drama, all of the above, I’ve endured it all and survived it all, we breed fighters. That fight, that passion for survival, is something I put behind everything I do, from music to fashion. My music and my brand are an incredible mesh of my life’s successes and failures.

KING.K the artist is a rugged, uncut, raw, and unfiltered lyricist, LWLSS the brand, represents the defiance, hustle, and gets it by any means necessary mentality that many people who survive poverty carry daily. After having a pretty decent start to a music career, life threw me a curveball which caused me to relocate to Atlanta, GA, I did not have a lot of connections in the ATL music scene so I took a chance and enrolled in the SAE Institute of Technology to get a degree in audio engineering. I have always been in the studio and taught myself how to track and mix records, going to school was something I wanted to do to solidify the knowledge I accumulated over the years.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
When has life ever been easy, plenty of struggles? From getting fired from my first job in Atlanta at Dish Network to working my way up in the TV/Film production world to creating a business, everything was trial and error. Trust me, I failed so many times but what I could never do is quit.

We’d love to hear more about your business.
What makes me most proud of LWLSS is how the brand was birthed—created in the shadows of unarmed black men and women getting killed by police to receive no justice in the end. Justice has never been blind for us because of our skin we are convicted at higher rates, receive longer sentences, and are brutally and overly policed. That alone sets LWLSS apart from any other urban clothing line.

What were you like growing up?
I was the kid who knew everybody, I didn’t talk much, but when I spoke, people listened. Star athlete, I played football and ran track, I was always heavy into music, especially hip-hop and r&b. My family would say I was a terrorist lmao. I was the nephew/cousin/etc. No one wanted to babysit, but if you ask them who their favorite is, I bet they say it’s me, lol.
