Today we’d like to introduce you to Darryl Peoples.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Darryl. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I’m a model turned designer from Bessemer, AL. I’ve been modeling for three years and designing for two years. One day, I was preparing to model in a fashion show. While backstage, one of the designers was pressed for time and getting things ready to go out on stage. He told me to cut out a shirt pattern on the fabric, which he said” This is expensive fabric. If you mess it up, you will not be in my scene.” I laid the pattern down and walked away because I was nervous and didn’t want to ruin his expensive fabric. The very next day, I went to buy a sewing machine. It was exactly two days before I decided to try and make anything with it. I didn’t even know how to thread the needle. I wasn’t confident in myself until I made a dress for my sister. This is what made me who I am today. My company Heru Ra Creations, represents originality, personality, and confidence. The name Heru Ra means (SUN GOD) in ancient Egyptian history. That’s where the Originality comes from. The personality and confidence is within the creations. I started this journey back in 2016 after realizing that I suffer from a mental illness. I started going to counseling to get the treatment that was needed. That pushed me to be who I am today. With my brand, I want to bring awareness to the black community about mental health. I want to give EVERYONE a voice.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
The road for me has not been easy. I’ve struggled with believing in myself, networking / socializing, and overcoming my mental illness. I suffer from depression and social anxiety and I’ve always been an introvert. In June 2017, I started going to counseling. That was the best thing I could have ever done. That was a big step for me. I’m extremely proud of myself for overcoming that part of my life. Now I feel like I can be an advocate to help many others and assure them that it’s completely okay to be different.
We’d love to hear more about your work and what you are currently focused on. What else should we know?
I’m a fashion designer. I specialize in sewing/designing custom women and men garments. I produce my own fashion shows, and I’m a mental health advocate. With my business, I want to encourage individuals on how to turn something negative into something positive. I’m known for being different. What I mean by that is, I like to step outside the box and take risks. What makes me really proud as a company is, I’m able to encourage and uplift many. Some see me as a mentor. I just want to continue to grow and encourage others to start their own businesses and embracing their passion. What sets me apart from others is, my creations has no boundaries!
What were you like growing up?
Growing up, I was always observant. I’m an introvert, so I was always to myself. I’ve always had a passion for drawing and art. I found excitement in taking things apart just to see how they were put together. I was the kid who would always asked questions or try to figure things out. Not knowing that I would be where I am today with my own business or even being considered a “Designer”.I’ve always had an interest for clothes and different styles. Now I’m designing my own looks.
