Today we’d like to introduce you to Daryl and Dominique James.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
Our journey as relationship coaches started years ago, prior to either of us knowing that we would create a business in the dating industry, and prior to us even knowing each other. The details of our stories may differ, but the overall theme is the same. We both found ourselves in long-term relationships that we believed would last forever, only to find ourselves alone and having to pick up the pieces to the future we once believed we had. The best thing about starting at ground zero is that you get to build whatever you want, exactly how you want it! So we both went through the process of rediscovering who we were as individuals and recreating the lives that we wanted. At the time we did not know it, but going through this process was building the foundation on which our business, Know Longer Single stands.
Fast forward about a year and a half after the process began, we met at a local sports bar in Midtown. Duke was in the Final 4 that year, and Dominique was there with a friend who had attended Duke and was there to support her school. The place was packed and Dominique was having trouble getting a menu. Daryl, who was a regular at the bar, saw the damsel in distress and easily got the attention of the bartender and got Dominique a menu. Long story short, by the end of the night, we came to the conclusion that Dominique looked like “Dark skin Aunt Viv” from the Fresh Prince, and numbers were exchanged. Things started off slowly, but a few months later we officially started dating and have been together ever since. We now have a beautiful baby girl! She turned one last March.
Fast forward another year and a half and our relationship has gotten serious, to the point where we are planning the marriage. One day, we were at the house sitting on the couch and decided that we both had wonderful friends and hobbies outside of each other, and we needed to find something that we could do together. We realized that we both were constantly helping our friends and family with relationship advice, so we decided that we would start a YouTube channel where we would answer questions about life, love, and relationships. We started off doing one video per week. We dropped a new video every Monday and people started to look forward to the videos! We were getting tons of questions each week and one day it hit us! Like, we can turn this into a business! And that is the day that Know Longer Single was born. We have now grown from YouTube videos to actual programs that walk you through what we have determined to be the 4 Phases of a healthy relationship. We now have a book that is the definitive guide for people looking to create a long-term relationship that they desire. The thing we are most excited about is our relationship app! We call it a relationship app instead of a dating app because it is going to change the way that people perceive and use dating apps. Our app not only matches you with individuals that you are potentially compatible with, but we take it a step further and walk you through the entire process of your relationship. From swiping right, all the way down to the altar, our app has something for you. The Know Longer Single Dating App is going to change the game!
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
The initial road of gaining the knowledge and experience that we teach was very difficult. Going through a breakup is hard, but it’s even more difficult to rebuild your life afterwards. Going through the process of dealing with insecurities and old wounds is a painful process, but it’s necessary for becoming an individual that is able to create the life that will attract the love that is meant to be in their life forever.
The road to building a business has been a rollercoaster, to say the least. Both of us having full-time jobs, plus a new baby doesn’t leave much free time to build a business. Which means we basically are working at something from the time that we wake up until we go to bed. I believe our faith in knowing where we are headed has made that the easiest part of building the business. The content of the books and programs are a part of who we are, so it’s just a matter of finding the time to get out thoughts down on paper and packaging them into a product that we can sell. The hardest part is having no clue on how to build a business and finding someone who is capable of providing what you need at an affordable price. Especially when you are trying to break into the dating app industry. In order to compete with the competition, your product has to be a certain level and producing a product of that caliber is not cheap. Finding funding for our app has by far been the most difficult challenge we have faced so far.
