Meet Datiana Gay of Everything Ego

Today we’d like to introduce you to Datiana Gay.

Hi Datiana, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
A pact gone wrong is how I landed in the beauty industry! When I was in college, a friend and I made a pact to cut all of our relaxed hair off and go natural. It was a big decision to commit to and instead of doing it alone, we decided to do it together!

She made an appointment with her hairstylist and I made one with mine. On the day of my appointment, everything ran smoothly.

My hairstylist was excited for me! She gave me a few tips on how to accessorize my new cut and after she chopped my hair off; I put on some big hoop earrings she gifted me with, we scheduled my next appointment and I went on my way.

When I returned back to school, my friend still had all of her hair.

Her logic sat in before her appointment and she had thought about something I didn’t think about.

How were we going to manage our hair in between appointments? What products were we going to use?

At the time, there were not a lot of natural hair care products on the market. I tested what was available and eventually after being frustrated, I started wearing protective styles such as sew ins and braids.

I thought protective styles were going to be easier, but it was even more frustrating. The frustration from the hair extensions is really the fuel that pushed me into the beauty industry.

I needed quality products that blended well with my leave out and I also wanted hair that could be bleached while still looking nice.

When I couldn’t find what I wanted, I figured I couldn’t be the only one having the issues I was having. I started on my journey to help other women. Created a hair extension business and expanded into a hair and beauty brand. Here we are!

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
LOL, no! The ride has not been smooth, but it has been enjoyable. When I first started, I felt like a lost kid in a candy store. The idea of being an entrepreneur excited me, but I didn’t know what I was doing. At first, I dealt with things like; struggling to find the balance between working full time, being a mom, operating a business, trusting people and I struggled with unrealistic expectations such as aiming for perfection. Then, one day I had an honest conversation with myself. I told myself to chill TF out and stop stressing my body out. I took myself to therapy to figure out why I was having the struggles I was having. I worked on myself, stop trying to be superwoman, created realistic habits and now I just flow.

What matters most to you?
Self-love, mental health and healing. With self-love, I have learned a lot of the places you go and the people you entertain are a direct reflection of how you love and treat yourself. When it comes to mental health and healing, there are far too many talented people who can’t see or reach their potential because they are stuck in battles that they haven’t healed from. I don’t like that for them. I like to see my clients glowing from the inside out!
