Today we’d like to introduce you to Dave Williamson.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I started in high school photographing my friends while we were out skateboarding. I quickly learned that this is something I was passionate about. Skateboard photography quickly turned into photographing as many sports events as I could attend.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It has definitely not been a smooth road, as with any business it has had its ups and downs. The world of sports photography is not just taking the photos. Its gaining access to the events, the cost of the equipment most photographers do not use on a daily basis, and the knowledge of the sports that you are photographing. The one huge factor is that clients expect photos to be delivered during the game and within 30 minutes after the game is over. As with any photography company you have to keep up with trends and what the client’s expectations are for the shoot.
Please tell us about Dave Williamson Photography.
I am a full-service photography company. I do not only do sports photography but head shots, family, real estate, senior and wedding photography. I am most known for my sports photography, but mainly my coverage of soccer. I have a passion for the game and have come to be able to anticipate and capture the moments of the game to the highest level.
As far as what I am most proud of is having photos on the FIFA website for my coverage of the charity I work with Soccer in the Streets. Being able to give back this way makes it seem less like work and more like I am just having fun on a daily basis.
Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
Some of the best memories I have are my grandmother taking me to soccer games when the Atlanta Chiefs and Georgia Generals played around Atlanta. I remember watching the game but also remember seeing the photographers who were there and wanting to one day be one of those guys. The funny thing is I am now photographing Atlanta United games with those same guys now.
