Today we’d like to introduce you to David Carr.
David, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I grew up in an artistic family. My mother paints and draws and she’s exceptional at it. My father was a local radio personality in the 70’s and 80’s so, performance and artistic expression were just part of my upbringing. I’ve always been visually creative. I began pursuing photography about 5 years ago. I had always appreciated photography and finally, something in me compelled me to want to learn just how the great photographers do what they do -how they get such amazing shots. Thus, my journey ensued and I have since let it grow organically. I hope to never ‘arrive’ but instead to always be learning and growing as an artist. I feel such great reward each time I capture a fantastic image with my camera. It rarely comes easy but it’s incredibly fulfilling when it happens. Working with people is often challenging but then so rewarding. I love striving to put my subject’s mind at ease and my goal is always to give them something they can feel proud of. Most people don’t like having their picture taken so I consider it my job to create an environment where they are comfortable and relaxed, because after all, those emotions are essential to a capturing a good portrait.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I’ve been fortunate to be able to ease myself into photography, moving from a hobby to a secondary career to now a full-time career. My previous career afforded me the time and resources to grow in my photography and now that I’ve taken it on full time, it’s exhilarating. So, I have yet to struggle but ironically, I welcome it because I believe that great art more often than not comes out of struggle. Struggle forces one to dig deeply into the soul which is the source truest expression.
Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about David Carr Photography – what should we know?
I am the sole proprietor of my company at this point. I specialize in portraiture and headshots. When I began my journey into photography I was on the road a lot, working in my previous profession. Thus, my early work was mostly street and landscape photography. Several years ago, I realized that the field I really wanted to concentrate on was portraiture, as I saw it to be more viable and more personally rewarding.
I would say I’m most proud of how I interact with people. I believe I excel at making people feel welcomed and relaxed in doing something that often brings out the opposite emotions.
Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
I feel like one can have all the technical knowledge and equipment in the world but if they’re difficult to communicate with and if they’re not relational, then it’s a recipe for disaster. Having your portrait taken can be intimidating from a self-confidence standpoint. It’s also a toss of the dice as to whether or not you’re going to like the finished product, so to me it is essential that I take a holistic approach, making sure the work is technically excellent and leaves the client feeling glad they chose me from a professional and relational standpoint.
