Meet David Day of Day’s Barber Shop in Canton

Today we’d like to introduce you to David Day.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I started out working with my dad as an apprentice barber a year or so after I finished college. I had tried a few other jobs and found I just preferred being around people and not having the stress of an office job. My dad and I worked together in our Sandy Springs location for about 13 years. In 2007, the shop in Canton became available when the former owner retired. Since I lived in Cumming at the time, it was a much better commute. Which is obviously good. But, I was a little nervous going to a new location and having to build a new clientele. I’ve been in this location for about 10.5 years now and business is good. I feel like many of my customers are also friends. I feel like I’m not just cutting hair all day. I’m also having a good time with friends. That’s really cool.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
As I said earlier, I was a little concerned at first, just because I had to build a whole new clientele. I also had another barber working with me for a while and found that the business just wasn’t there at the time for two full time barbers. It’s grown now and sometimes I consider bringing in a new barber. But, my dad closed his own shop not long ago and is helping out on the weekends some. It’s good having that time with him again. Not sure I’d want to mess that up by bringing in someone new right now.

Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Day’s Barber Shop – what should we know?
I do old fashioned, mostly men’s cuts. I’ve been doing this for about 24 years now and am always striving to give the best haircut possible. I’ve had customers go somewhere else when I was out of town, and they almost always come back wishing they’d waited until I got back to work. Several have told me that I’ve given them the best cuts they’ve ever had. I’ve also been willing to go to customers’ homes and/or the hospital or nursing home when customers need that level of service. Again, many of these people have become friends. I really want to be there for them when needed.

Any shoutouts? Who else deserves credit in this story – who has played a meaningful role?
My dad. Not only did he teach me how to cut hair, but he also taught me the business side. More so than any of that though, he taught me how to treat people. When someone sits in my barber chair, I want to make sure that they walk away happy.
