Today we’d like to introduce you to David Lane.
Ed Lane, David Lane, and William Rankin, Atlanta natives and co-founders of Blue Donkey Coffee, all love the beautiful complexities of micro-roasted coffee. Their appreciation for craft coffee developed while living overseas and exploring the domestic roasting and brewing culture.
The ultimate pursuit of a great cup of coffee inspired in them for a new passion: craft iced coffee. After months of ingredient selection, brewing methods, and recipe testing, the team revealed their creation to family & friends; It was an instant success. They then began selling their craft coffee products at local farmers markets, receiving extremely positive feedback from customers. Since Blue Donkey has expanded to additional retail and pop-up locations within the Atlanta area continually focusing on innovative iced coffee offerings and a few highly selective craft coffee products.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Considering our commitment to using 100% natural ingredients and as many local ingredients as possible at times it has been a challenge and a learning experience on the logistical side. All our products are very fresh and need to be refrigerated so we have to pay very close attention to product processing, transportation, and storage. Many items in the supply chain we have brought in-house to ensure product quality and consistency.
Please tell us about Blue Donkey Craft Coffee.
We have chosen to focus on iced coffee drinks as our core product. Many other coffee companies focus on whole bean coffee, or espresso drinks, or drip but our main focus has been to introduce innovative and 100% natural iced coffee options to the Atlanta market. We believe people always want to experience new flavors and new ways of tasting any beverage or food so our commitment to product innovation and differentiation has always been part of our cultural DNA.
If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
We would have researched more and brought in more opinions before moving forward on specific decisions. There are now so many resources readily available to help make decisions. Knowledge is everything!
