Today we’d like to introduce you to David Muehlenkamp.
Hi David, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
My life’s work lives somewhere at the intersection of art, music, and activism. Over the past ten years, I have lived in Nigeria as a tour DJ for some of Africa’s biggest stars, worked on a presidential campaign, and resided as West Elm’s featured Artist of the Month. I was born in Brooklyn, NY and raised outside DC, which gave me a great appreciation for multi-cultural surroundings.
Since moving to Atlanta in 2020 with my partner to start our family, I have worked on non-stop political campaigns, accumulating nine victories in just four years in municipal, statewide, and presidential cycles. I also hosted my first solo art show in Atlanta this past December while producing an album and two singles with various music artists from Atlanta and Nigeria. My art, along with my politics, pulls inspiration from connecting cultures and giving voice to those who need it most.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Life is never a smooth road. Campaigns have intense highs and lows that will test your mental fortitude. While canvassing on my first campaign (the historic Barack Obama 2008 Presidential run in Ohio), I was shot at twice by an elderly racist man who didn’t want me or Obama in his neighborhood. I was shaken up and scared for my volunteers’ safety, but I ultimately came back to work the next day more ready than ever to elect leaders who will bring this country together.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
My background is in the music industry. I am most known for being a tour DJ for some of Africa’s biggest stars and playing shows at sold-out venues in Nigeria, South Africa, New York, and London. I loved living as a club DJ in Lagos, Nigeria where I worked with some of the top producers in the world and became engrained in their culture and music.
Today, I am a multi-disciplinary artist specializing in paintings, sculptures, original fashion, and music. My art to this day has been molded by my time living in Lagos. I learned that the world is smaller than we think, and I try to convey my love for different cultures in my creations.
Alright so before we go can you talk to us a bit about how people can work with you, collaborate with you or support you?
I am a collaborator at heart. I love working with other artists in all forms to create something new and original. You can reach me at MuehlenkampDesigns@gmail.com or on Instagram at @Wav.os.
