Today we’d like to introduce you to Dawn Henderson.
Dawn, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I always suffered from eczema and sensitive skin, so I had a really hard time finding products that worked for me. I made my own products for years and my favorite was a coffee scrub that I made more frequently than others. In September of 2017, I was a new mom and in between jobs. At my new job, they were giving away fresh coffee grounds and I took a bunch home to make coffee scrub for myself. I ended up with a lot, so I decided to get on Facebook to see who else would want some. In the status, I put all of the ingredients and the benefits for your skin and from there, things took off. Within a month, I decided to make a website and in nine months, I grossed over six figures. It was unreal and it happened so fast. 2.5 years later, here we are!
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
I would definitely be lying if I said anything about entrepreneurship is smooth. My biggest struggle was getting over the fact that I didn’t create boundaries for myself in the beginning. It’s hard to explain, but because all of this manifested so fast for me, I made myself easily accessible and I cared a lot about what everyone thought. I became obsessed with everything being so perfect that if something out of my control got in my way, I would literally break completely down. It took so long for me to realize that I was human and that I definitely needed to establish some healthy boundaries 1) for my mental health and 2) so that I could get out of my own head and keep pushing.
Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Sweet D Organics – what should we know?
Sweet D Organics is a holistic personal care company. We have a wide range of handmade holistic products that are made with natural ingredients that promote self-care inside and out! We’re known for our skincare and feminine products and we have a very diverse customer base and we definitely have a spiritual connection with our customers that sets us apart. As a small, black, and woman-owned company, I believe it’s important to have that connection with our customers so that they know what they’re receiving is made for people like them for people like them.
Any shoutouts? Who else deserves credit in this story – who has played a meaningful role?
It shouldn’t be of any surprise that I’ve found some AMAZING women on social media that have motivated me, talked me through some tough times and who have always had my best interest at heart. To name a few, Elizabeth Harris is someone I met at my first speaking engagement, she was also a motivational speaker and from the day I met her she always had a word for me that made me feel as if I was doing exactly what I was called to do. Tay Watts, she has a bomb candle business called Posh Candle Co., and I always admired how she handled entrepreneurship, so eventually, we connected and I’ve always been able to ask her questions or for advice since we’ve connected. My assistant, Taisha has always been a huge factor. Without her, I’m not sure we would be where we are today. There are so many more people I could name, but I’d be rambling. Having a business is almost like a baby because it takes a village. Even if you operate on your own, you still need that support outside of inside operations.
