Meet DeAnna Brooks of D’s Delights in Conyers

Today we’d like to introduce you to DeAnna Brooks.

DeAnna, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
It’s actually a funny story on how I started my business! We were having a pumpkin carving party at our home and I needed some cupcakes. My go-to baker was busy and booked, so my husband encouraged me to make them myself. So, without having any experience in baking, I, of course, turned to my go-to source – PINTEREST LOL!!!!! After some of my guests tasted my strawberry infused cupcakes, they just had to have more. After I started receiving several orders, I then decided, hmm… maybe I should start my own business.

I started my business with just making cupcakes until one of my close friends requested me to make her son’s birthday cake! At first, I told her “I’ve never tried cakes”, but, she insisted that this be my first.  She was not taking NO for an answer. To my amazement, it didn’t turn out bad at all! So, I decided to invest in myself and perfect my skills by enrolling in a cake class to learn the fundamentals of decorating cakes. Shortly after that, my business literally skyrocketed overnight!!!!

Has it been a smooth road?
Being a career woman, as well as a business owner can be challenging at times. Growing my business was not a rocky road, because my family and friends have supported me 100%. I always tell people, “You give off the energy, that you want to receive.” But, I would have to say my biggest struggle is turning down orders. I never thought in a million years, that I myself, would own a business, and definitely not that business being baking LOL.  Often times, I do struggle with “yes” or “I can fit you in.” As my business continues to grow, I have learned that prioritizing and saying “no”, along with taking a break is always much needed!

So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the D’s Delights story. Tell us more about the business.
D’s Delights is a home-based business that specializes in custom cakes & more! If I had to be known for anything, I would have to say, my intricate cake designs, as well as my flavor profiles. I often tell people that two people can make the same cake, but the end result will always taste different! When baking my cakes I ALWAYS say a prayer over my hands for the creativity to flow and let it take over! One of my secret ingredients to ALL my cakes is 1Cup of love! As a growing entrepreneur, I am most proud of my being a business owner, more than anything and having a thriving business. Sometimes I have to stop and look in the mirror because I am in disbelief that I took a leap of faith to start my own business.

How do you think the industry will change over the next decade?
Within the next 5-10 years, I am with hopes, that I will open a storefront within the Metro Atlanta area! Also incorporating shipping sweet treats, and someday having my sweets in retails stores for the world to taste!! I hope to leave my career behind and live my dream of being a full-time entrepreneur!
